Assassin’s Creed Valhalla: How to Beat Redwalda

how to beat redwalda

Zealots are some of the hardest boss encounters in Ubisoft’s latest action-RPG, and if you’re unprepared with the wrong items and strategy then you’re likely to find them hugely challenging. Here’s a guide on how to beat Redwalda in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, if you’re struggling.

How to Beat Redwalda in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Redwalda can be found close to Ravensthorpe, just north-west, patrolling a Roman ruin. He’s actually one of the easier Zealots to beat, but because you’re likely to encounter him early in the game, he’s likely to give players trouble. Redwalda is Power Level 90, so you really do need to be at least the same level to take him on. It doesn’t hurt to make sure you have full HP, plenty of healing handy, and your Adrenaline filled.

Zealots wield several different weapon types, but Redwalda sticks with a basic large sword and shield combination. It’s the shield that really makes him hard to hit, as I’m sure you’ve discovered. The trick is that you want to use a weapon that offers speed, as opposed to something heavy-hitting.

In fact, the same strategy applies to basically all Zealot encounters in the game. Do not try and take on a Zealot (especially one with a shield) using a dual-handed weapon. Even a single-handed axe isn’t really fast enough — at least, not until you’ve got the hang of the timing.

Instead, use a dagger weapon like the Kopis Dagger or Seax to beat Redwalda. These fast-striking weapons allow you to get in, chip away, and then dodge. If I can give one piece of advice, it’s to get up close and personal with Zealots. Don’t try and hit them at range because they’ll just block you every time.

The basic strategy is to wait for Redwalda to attack (standard, yellow, red — it doesn’t matter), quickly dodge, hit him with a light attack, then dodge again. You’re trying to hit him just after their attack animation finishes. You’ll find the dagger weapons surprisingly effective at landing hits even when it appears as though Redwalda’s attack animation has finished. Just remember to only light attack.

Another great reason to use a dagger is that, since you’ll build adrenaline for every hit, you can rely on your meter filling quickly with all the fast strikes you land. If you have the incendiary or poison ability handy, make sure you assign this and make use of it as soon as you have enough Adrenaline since it makes every strike hit for more damage.

And that, really, is all there is to it. Just be confident and keep dodging and counter-striking, then using your abilities once you have the Adrenaline.

If you really can’t get the hang of this strategy, it is possible to use a long spear and simply jab Redwalda from distance. You’ll find this takes a while, though, and it isn’t my preferred method.
