What Happened in Assassin’s Creed Origins’ Ending

There will be spoilers ahead for the ending of Assassin’s Creed Origins which includes a character reveal as well as some other last minute happenings after the game’s main story. If you would not like to be completely spoiled, turn back now and experience the game and its ending for yourself.

Assassin’s Creed Origins has a lot of moving pieces going on throughout its main campaign. While players mostly take control of Bayek of Siwa, as promised by Ubisoft leading up to the game’s release, they also get to control Layla Hassan, a rogue Abstergo agent in the present, and Aya of Siwa, Bayek’s wife and aide to Cleopatra. The story follows Bayek and Aya’s quest for vengeance against the Order of the Ancients, a secret society working in Egypt’s shadows that caused the death of their son, Khemu.

After a long journey, and running across many dead members of the secret order, something new is created by Bayek and Aya. They form the Hidden Ones, an organization that would eventually evolve into the Assassins that we know today. The symbol is etched in sand by an eagle skull Bayek happened to discard, and the vow of secrecy and decision to only assassinate those who are most deserving of death are set. But the main mission isn’t over. There are still targets left to take out and they include Septimius, the Jackal of the Order of the Ancients, and Caesar. After that is taken care of, the first ending of Assassin’s Creed Origins, the one set in ancient Egypt, is shared.

Aya has formed a Bureau of the Hidden Ones in Rome after slaying both Caesar and Septimius in their own home city. Afterwards, she pays Cleopatra a visit, one that will prove fateful in the future. She warns the queen of Egypt that if she doesn’t do right by her people she would be the next to greet death. Aya has helped to create the order that will see to it, and in doing so has recreated herself.

She decides that Aya died along with Khemu and the relationship she had with Bayek (a necessary evil in order for them both to help the world). So she shares her new identity, one that will sound familiar to fans of the series (especially those that played Assassin’s Creed II). She is now Amunet, the Hidden One. If this sounds familiar to all you lore buffs, it’s because she is a celebrated Egyptian assassin who was known as being the one to assassinate Cleopatra using a venomous asp, showing that she definitely keeps true to her word. After sharing her new name, she just vanishes into thin air, off to begin building the legend we learn of centuries later.

She’s not the only person to start something new though. In the present day, Layla Hassan wakes up to see an older gentleman standing over her. That man is William Miles, the father of Desmond Miles and the current mentor of the assassins. He caught wind of what Layla was doing and went to see for himself to both learn and to recruit her. He informs her that Abstergo would always hunt her, something they’ve already begun to do. He offers her a place among the assassins, seeing that the bleeding effect of the Animus has already given her some of the skills since she spent so much time as Bayek. She will have training and freedom to continue her project in whatever way she wants to.

She accepts, though sharing that she doesn’t trust him or his order. Still, it’s a new beginning for her, just as it was for Bayek and Aya. It will be interesting to see where this goes, as players actually got a chance to kill as Layla earlier in the story. Hopefully this means more modern day assassinations going forward.
