How to Improve Town Rating in Animal Crossing New Horizons

To check out your current town rating for your island, you’re going to need to speak to Isabelle in the Resident Services building. If you have yet to unlock her and the upgraded building in your game, find out how to do that here.

Once you go up to her, you’ll be able to ask her about “Island evals” and she’ll let you know how the feedback has been for your island, its current rating, and what you can do to improve upon it. She’ll typically just tell you one single task like to add flowers or more outdoor furniture.

To get to the two-star rank, you’ll need to have at least eight villagers in your town, so once you unlock the Campsite, you can just check in there every so often until a new villager shows up and you can invite them to move in.

You can also find other potential villagers on the deserted islands that you can travel to with your Nook Miles. Just speak to them a couple of times and they’ll more than likely be happy to check out your town.

Once you have a good amount of villagers, you will now need to really spruce up your town with anything you can find. Throw down some craftable furniture, make birdbaths, benches, chairs, fenced-in gardens with flowers, and paths. Basically, you need to make your island look pretty and more impressive to the eye.

Make sure to remove all of the weeds, stumps, and any other random items that are just lying on the floor because that’s only going to negatively affect your town rating from Isabelle.

If you need advice on what to do next, just keep speaking to Isabelle and she’ll give you tips on what can be improved upon.

Getting to 5 Stars

The ultimate goal in Animal Crossing New Horizons is to get your island rating up to 5 stars. Doing so will reward you with the golden watering can. In addition to that, each day your island is at 5 stars, there’s a chance that the rare Lily of the Valley flower will spawn somewhere on your island.

Getting to 5 stars requires you to understand the points system in place here. You’ll need your development score to be above 665, and your scenery score needs to be above 450.

Your development score involves you getting all buildings and shops fully upgraded, and having the maximum number of residents on your island will also help greatly. It’s the scenery score that’s the tricky part.

With scenery, you’ll need to constantly talk to Isabelle for island evals as mentioned previously, and she’ll give you tips on how to improve the image of your island. As you get closer to the upper tiers of 4 stars and into 5 stars territory, it’ll become trickier to keep up appealing scenery.

When this happens, you’ll need to place furniture (both bought and crafted) all over the island to increase the score. We’ve listed the number of items you need from each category to reach 5 stars down below:

  • DIY items: 70 or more
  • Nook Miles items: 20 or more
  • Shop items: 65 or more
  • Flowers and trees: 250 or more
  • Fencing: 250 or more

To sum up how to improve town rating in Animal Crossing New Horizons

  1. Remove weeds, trash, and other items laying around on your island.
