How to Get Purple Hyacinths in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Before you can think about cross-breeding your flowers to produce new colors, you need to get your hands on some hyacinths first. This can be done in a number of ways.

First, you should check to see if your island’s native flower is hyacinths. If so, your life just got a lot easier. Native flowers typically grow on the top two tiers of your island, so grab your ladder and look for red, white, and yellow flowers. You can use your shovel to dig them up.

If your native flower isn’t hyacinths, there are a number of ways to obtain them. The first is by checking the cabinet in Nook’s Cranny store daily. The seed selection rotates daily, so there’s a chance you can buy hyacinth seeds each day.

When Leif, the gardener NPC, visits your island, he will also sell a collection of seeds. Again, it’s random which types of seeds he will be selling, but you can find hyacinth seeds in his makeshift shop.

It’s important to note that the seeds will only be sold in red, yellow, and white. That’s okay! We’ll explain how you can use these colors to get purple hyacinths in the section below.

There’s also a chance you can get lucky and find hyacinths while visiting island tours. However, you can only find your own native flower and one other type on island tours. If you see two different types, you won’t be able to find hyacinths this way.

How to Cross Breed Hyacinths to Get Purple

Cross-breeding hyacinths to get purple flowers is a two-step process.

First, you’ll need a red hyacinth and a yellow hyacinth. Plant these in a grid diagonally from each other. For example, in a grid of four tiles, the red hyacinth could be in the top right and the yellow could be in the bottom left. The other two spaces in the grid must be empty for a new flower to populate.

You’ll want to water these two flowers every day for a chance of them producing an orange hyacinth. It might not happen the first day since flower spawns are random. You can increase the odds of flowers populating by having friends water them.

Once you’ve produced an orange hyacinth…do it again! You’ll need two orange hyacinths for the next step.

With two orange hyacinths in hand, plant those two diagonally from each other just as you did with the red and yellow flowers. Repeat the process of watering them until they produce a spawn.

Two orange hyacinths will produce a purple hyacinth. It may take some time, but eventually, you’ll see purple buds growing. When you see the purple buds, it means you’ve successfully cross-bred your hyacinths—congratulations!

Purple hyacinths not only look pretty, but they can be used in a variety of DIY recipes. Keep cross-breeding and growing more of them—they’re quite valuable.
