Game of Thrones
The Witcher has been dubbed as “the next Game of Thrones” for a good reason.
Both feature plenty of adult subject matter, fantastical elements, and intense medieval battles that leave you on the edge of your seat.
Alongside this, both shows are character dramas, focusing on the struggles the main characters find themselves having to overcome.
More than anything, neither show is afraid to explore the seedy underbelly of the politics and poverty of the world, as well as the morally gray characters that make it up.
While they do have some differences regarding structure, the similarities in both setting and source material are strikingly similar.
The Last Kingdom
Another series that borrows source material from the books of the same name, The Last Kingdom takes place during late 9th century AD, a time when England was divided into seven separate kingdoms.
Through the eyes of fictional protagonist Uhtred of Bebbanburg, the show mixes historically inspired events with innovative stories surrounding the time period. Themes of upbringing, loyalty, and many other politically-fueled subject matters are among those explored in The Last Kingdom, providing plenty of intrigue along the way.
Though it is certainly more historical fantasy, fans will find the characters and scenarios are certainly in line with the overarching story of The Witcher’s weaving main plot.
Legend of the Seeker
In a world ruled by magic and the Wizards who wield it, the province of Westland lives separate, using a barrier to keep the sorcery at bay. Secrets and powerful people dwell deep within this barrier, though, and it is up to a group of adventurers to find them.
Much like The Witcher, Legend of the Seeker deals with the destruction that tyranny and war can cause, especially when magic is involved.
Prophosphy also plays a heavy role in moving the plot forward, as a young man, Richard Cypher, must accept his destiny and learn from a powerful Wizard in the hopes to save the world.
Vikings
Can’t get enough of the grit that accompanies alley fights in Blaviken? How about the brute culture that surrounds the isles of Skellige?
If you enjoyed either of those in The Witcher, then Vikings is definetly in your wheelhouse.
As the title dictates, Vikings is a fantastical version of the Nordic sagas of Viking Ragnar Lothbrok, better known as the scourge of England and France.
Follow Ragnar’s rise, from his humble beginnings as a farmer to his coronation as a Scandinavian King, experiencing all of the action and drama that unfolds along the way.
The Tudors
The Tudors quietly altered the landscape of television when it debuted on Showtime back in 2007, combining historical text with modernized fiction to create one of the most compelling dramas on television.
Set primarily in 16th-century England, the show focuses on the early years of King Henry VIII’s illustrious 40-year reign of England.
While it definetly explores more on the government side of things, fans of The Witcher will surely enjoy the wit and spectacle that accompanies it all.
From a familiarity standpoint, it also helps that Geralt of Rivia himself is in the show. Henry Cavil shines in a supporting role as Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk throughout the entire series.
