Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5’s Online Details Revealed

In a PlayStation Blog post today, Josh Tsui the president of Robomodo, gave us all some fresh new details on how the online side of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 will work.

In the post, Tsui stated that connecting online with other players is completely different than previous games in the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series. Tsui first discussed the freeskate levels. These areas will act as a lobby for up to 20 players to hang out, skate and nail that sick grind in between the different missions and online matches that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 will offer.

These freeskate sessions will be hosted by dedicated servers (hooray for reliability), so you can pop in and skate around and then head offline whenever you fancy, rather than having to rely on peer servers.

Tsui then went on to discuss the ‘Sessions’ menu. This menu will become your multipurpose tool for playing online, allowing you to queue up missions or modes, manage your party of skaters and check who’s skating around the park you’re in. Once you’ve finished the mission or mode you can either choose to retry/ rematch or jump seamlessly back into the previously mentioned Freeskate area. Fool around with friends while you decide what to do next, queue up your missions and then start again.

Tsui emphasised the simplicity of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5’s online by stating that it has been designed to allow players to get online and playing with their friends quickly and easily. Unfortunately it would seem that these online mechanics were too much for last gen consoles, and so only the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game will have online play.

The PlayStation Blog post also detailed Sony-exclusive content available to all PlayStation gamers who picked up Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 on PlayStation 3 or PlayStation 4.
