Borderlands "Superbowl" Commercial is Weird as Hell

Lick the robot. LICK THE ROBOT.

Gearbox were apparently incredibly close to taking out a Superbowl advertisement for their upcoming release, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, but they ran out of time. As a result, we the people have been left to enjoy the commercial without having to suffer through 6 hours of replays. Wait did I say enjoy? I mean endure.

Superbowl advertisements have a tradition of costing more than the Gross Domestic Product of a small country so it’s probably a good thing that this commercial supposedly missed the cut. The commercial, which features a huge and almost terrifying man-child playing with (also licking) a remote controlled CL4P-TP, channels memories of the worst 90s TV ads we as a species ever saw. Everything from the oddly bright colors to the vomit-inducing staircase carpet design sort of makes us happy that this seems to have missed out on the submission date.

This is obviously an attempt to go viral with an advertisement for Gearbox’s upcoming Borderlands: The Handsome Collection and its super special version which contains the CL4P-TP toy featured prominently in the commercial. The special edition is only available in certain countries though, not to mention having a borderline crazy price-tag hovering around the $399 mark. For those of us who have to spend money on things like bills, rent, or eating, the standard edition of this collection will cost about the same as a normal game. Borderlands: The Handsome Collection is due for released March 24th in the US, with Europe lagging behind and seeing the release March 27th on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

The Borderlands “Superbowl” commercial could have found its way into cultural infamy if it had aired live, but it didn’t. We all know that this was never actually intended for airing during the biggest sporting event of the year though. Viral online commercials always do better than the multi-million dollar ones after all.

Has this commercial for Borderlands: The Handsome Collection got you interested in picking up the title? Maybe you’re a PC gamer who has no need for these shiny collections? Did watching the advertisement give you flashbacks of watching Saturday morning cartoons for stuff like this? Let us know in the comments down below.
