10 Beloved Sidekicks That Need Their Own Games

It's time for these sidekicks to take center stage!

Zelda

hyrule warriors

The true sidekick of sidekicks! Game after game Zelda is so often relegated to the backseat as our hero link goes off to save Hyrule again and again. But the great protagonist would be a Zelda that saves herself rather by taking the lead. She’s the princess, she’s the boss of Hyrule Kingdom. And moreover, unlike her dainty peer Peach from the Mario series, we know Zelda is combat ready after she covertly aided link as Sheik in Ocarina of Time. Let’s not forget that not only can she hold her own in combat, she’s also the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, putting her on equal footing with Link’s Triforce of Courage and Ganon’s Triforce of Power. It’s time for Zelda to beat Ganon on her own terms!

Sully

The one, the eternal, Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Constantly traveling with his companion and protege Nathan Drake in the Uncharted series, Sully is an obvious choice for someone who deserves his own game. He is the master treasure hunter – he taught Drake everything he knows. Getting to either see Sully go off the rails on his own, or perhaps some of the epic adventures from his past, would be an excellent way to more fully flesh out his character.

Garrus

The savvy, suave, and hilarious Turian that warms all our hearts. Garrus Vakarian may be a master behind Mass Effect’s main cannon in the Normandy with all of his constant “calibrations,” but he’s also a competent soldier with his own storied history with the Turian military. Experiencing his misadventures before meeting Shepherd would be a treat to be relished. Not to mention Garrus is one of the few characters that won’t simply give Shepherd a free pass on all their shenanigans. Hell, if we had a solo Garrus adventure, we could even learn about this reach and flexibility he’s always talking about.

Dorian

Speaking of suave and remarkably handsome men, one cannot forget the masterful grace of the resident Dragon Age: Inquisition hunk, Dorian Pavus. With that beautiful mustache, magical talent, and a troubled past, Dorian has the perfect history that would make for a fantastic game. Who can resist his masculine charm, anyway? Dorian would be the perfect mage to woo all the men of Ferelden.

Otacon

Of the many personalities that are met along the path of Solid Snake, none are quite so notable as his impromptu ally Otacon. Saved from Gray Fox, Otacon uses his remarkable intelligence and good fortune to aid Snake to his goals. Having an entire game based on Otacon’s adventures through the winding plot that is the Metal Gear universe would no doubt lead to a very cerebral and celebrated storyline.

Okosan

Of all the birds that are able to be romanced in Hatoful Boyfriend, none are quite as magical as Okosan. He’s the only bird without a cute anime boy portrait throughout the game, and he’s the only bird so magical as to COO! his way to his delicious pudding. Many of us already know how Okosan’s remarkable search for pudding ends (if not, play the game!), but being able to experience a game highlighting the many misadventures of Okosan would be a truly glorious experience without equal in the realm of bird-touching visual novels.

Tiny Tina

Easily the wildest and most eclectic of the rowdy cast in the Borderlands series, Tiny Tina stands out as a smart, intelligent, probably psychotic, but mostly hilarious child who wants nothing but some good, ol’ fashioned, bloodlusting, destruction and explosions. How is such a character not a perfect shoe-in for their own game in the Borderlands series? We already know how wild Claptrap can be, and have already seen the bizarre adventures of Tina’s imagination in Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep. It’s time for a proper Tiny Tina game!

Elizabeth

The most helpful companion in all of video games! Always on the hunt for extra ammo or food hiding on some random park bench, and prepared to summon alternate dimension apparitions into existence for Booker’s sky-hook swinging attacks, Bioshock Infinite’s courageous companion is easily underestimated in her physics bending capabilities. Having an entire game to herself would not only extend the beloved franchise and show off Elizabeth’s inner strength, but also her remarkable abilities as a main gameplay mechanic. Who wouldn’t want to experience summoning wild items into reality to stop enemies?

Rinoa and The Forest Owls

Everyone who has experienced the vibrant science-fantasy world of Final Fantasy VIII will remember Squall’s intrepid and ever-optimistic companion, Rinoa. Although the two are better known as star-crossed lovers and companions to the end of their wild adventure, many forget that before the two met, Rinoa was the leader of an underground resistance organization known as the Forest Owls. While the team was a little… well, quirky is a good way to put it, the spearheaded and daring organization resisted the pseudo-dictator Vinzer Deling as well as the Sorceress Edea. Heck, if the Forest Owls could pull off a wildly complex plan like kidnapping the President mid-train ride down the countryside, surely they have some more wild adventures worth exploring with Rinoa at the helm.
