Resident Evil 4
With Resident Evil 7 coming in early 2017, Capcom has begun to remaster most of its back catalogue. Arguably the most anticipated in the remaster of Resident Evil 4. The survival horror game is now over 10 years old but it is still one of the best horror games of all time and it certainly worth playing again.
Resident Evil 5
In 2009, Resident Evil 5 was released for consoles and PC and introduced the series to a more action focussed style of gameplay. The move away from survival horror disappointed some people but it isn't the worst game in the series so it could be worth trying for anyone looking forward to Resident Evil 7 in the new year.
Resident Evil 6
Originally released in 2012, Resident Evil 6 is the most recent game in the main Resident Evil series but it is considered by many as the low point for the . It focuses too much on third-person shooting, losing what made the Resident Evil series so great. It is relatively cheap so if you want to play it all before Resident Evil 7, it may be worth trying.
Deadlight: Director’s Cut
Deadlight originally came to Xbox 360 and PC in 2016 and was a homage to the classic, horror based sidescrolling cinematic platformers of the 80s and 90s. Earlier in the year, a director's cut was released PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC for anyone that wanted to experience the indie hit again.
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is a remake of 2007's JRPG Odin Sphere. It was originally released for PlayStation 2 but it is now playable on PS Vita, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3. The mix of 2D sidescrolling beat-em-up gameplay and RPG elements is excellent and is certainly worth playing if you missed its original release.
Dead Island Definitive Collection
Remastering the two Dead Island games seems strange decision. they were okay but technical difficulties, amongst other things held it back. Maybe they were remastered with now troubled Dead Rising 2 in mind but there are better games that do much of the same thing available, such as Dying Light. However, if you want to kill hoards of zombies by the beach, the Dead Island Definitive Collection is a fun way to do that.
Valkyria Chronicles Remastered
Originally released for PlayStation 3 in 2008, a remastered version of Valkyria Chronicles came to PlayStation 4 earlier this year. Set in the early years of World War II, in a fictional version of Europe, Valkyria Chronicles is a tactical RPG with a very interested story. It is certainly worth playing if it sounds like your kind of game.
Day of the Tentacle Remastered
Day of the Tentacle is a classic adventure game developed by LucasArts. The player takes control of three characters and solves puzzles using time travel. It's nearly 25 years old so it really benefits from the graphical upgrade. Anyone that missed it in 1993 should think about picking it up now.
Shadow Complex Remastered
Shadow Complex was originally exclusive to the Xbox 360 but has made its way to PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The game is a Metroidvania style platformer that was inspired by classics such as Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. It was one of the most popular and highest rated games of Xbox Live Arcade and is definitely worth trying for anyone that missed it.
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
Twilight Princess was originally released for the Nintendo Wii and Gamecube in 2006, but a high-definition remaster came to the Wii U earlier this year to mark its 10 year anniversary. Aside from the graphics it was largely unchanged, but it is another excellent entry in the Legend of Zelda series.
Heavy Rain
Heavy Rain was one of the best games on the PlayStation 3 and its visuals were never a problem. The story, characters, and performances are all excellent but, even having been remastered, the visuals look quite dated on the PlayStation 4. The visual upgrade might not be stellar but, for the story alone, Heavy Rain is a must play for anyone that missed out last generation.
Gravity Rush Remastered
With a Gravity Rush sequel planned to be released this year (now coming early next year) it made sense to re-release the excellent original. The action-adventure game only game to PlayStation Vita in 2012 but remastered version is available for PlayStation 4.
Resident Evil Zero HD Remaster
Resident Evil Zero was originally released in 2002 for the Nintendo Gamecube but a remaster game to current generation consoles. It was similar to the games that came before it but the player controlled two characters rather than the traditional one. The remaster looked good but the story of Resident Evil Zero remains forgettable.
Dead Rising
The survival horror beat-em-up series began on the Xbox 360 in 2006. Following Frank West, the player must protect themselves from zombies in a fictional town in Colorado. The remastered version gives players a chance to see where the series started before Dead Rising 4 is released in December.
The Ship Remasted (Early access)
The Ship is a multiplayer game focussed on 1920s cruise ship where the player must stay alive and hunt other travellers. A remastered version was revealed last year and it is available on Steam early access now.
Batman: Return to Arkham
Rocksteady's Batman: Arkham games are some of the best third-person action games of the last decade and are undoubtedly the best Batman games. The combat, level design, and performances are excellent but the visual upgrade in the new collection isn't that impressive. Also, it is a shame that Arkham Origins isn't included as it tells a fantastic Joker vs Batman story.
Dead Rising 2
The second Dead Rising game is very similar to the first but features a larger map and a greater variety of ways to murder all those zombies. It follows Chuck Greene, rather than Frank West, as he is stuck in a fictional shopping mall. Visually, it was quite a leap forward for the series.
Dear Esther: Landmark Edition
Developed by The Chinese Room, Dear Esther is a narrative focused game that is often referred to as a 'walking simulator'. With an emotional story, the player isn't required to do anything other than explore the island. Originally released in 2012, Dear Esther is great for anyone wanting to experience a powerful story of loss.
Dead Rising 2: Off the Record
Off the Record is a reimagining of the second Dead Rising game that features the series' main protagonist Frank West. It isn't considered canon in the Dead Rising series as it changes it plot so much but it offers some of the best moments from the series.
Rocksmith 2014 Edition – Remastered
Rocksmith 2014 Edition – Remastered is very similar to the original. It has added stat tracking, a new learning tool, and 6 new songs to the existing version. Anyone who already owns it will get the update free of charge but anyone who still wishes to learn the guitar whilst playing a game may want to pick up the latest version.
Lego Harry Potter Collection
The Lego Harry Potter games are some of the best loved Lego games based on a huge franchise. The characters of the Harry Potter world work excellently alongside the humor we traditionally see in Lego games. The were originally released a few years at a time but they are now all available, and remastered, for current-gen consoles.
Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy Remastered
The original Fahrenheit came to PlayStation 2 and Xbox in 2005 with the remaster initially coming to PC and mobile in 2015. Now, the remaster has made its way to PlayStation 4. Fahrenheit: Indigo Prophecy is an interactive drama from Quantic Dream, the developer of Heavy Rain, and it follows the same story focused style.
Assassin's Creed: Ezio Collection
Assassin's Creed 2 is widely regarded as the high point of Ubiosft's series. It introduced Ezio and built on potential shown by the first game. The Ezio trilogy explored Italy, telling the best story in any Assassin's Creed game. In November you can experience the games again, remastered for current generation consoles.
Ratchet and Clank
The excellent Ratchet and Clank series returned this year in the form of a re-imagining of the original game from 2002. The new version, playable on PlayStation 4, followed the same plot as the first game but was fleshed out with new weapons and added moments. It is also one of the best looking games on Sony's current console.
