Far Cry 5 allows you and a friend to explore the rural countryside of Montana with helicopters, wingsuits, and grenade launchers. The weapons are handy for the cult that has overtaken the small towns and turned them into outposts, and the animals that do not like any humans from stepping onto their turf.
Warframe is free-to play and offers plenty of hours of parkouring ninjas with fantastical weaponry. The game has plenty of characters to play as with different abilities, such as turning invisible or setting everything in the nearby vicinity on fire.
Steam
While Left 4 Dead 2 has AI companions, it is better to play with real people. You will need it when hordes of zombies surround your character, fill your screen, and you’re emptying magazine after magazine of assault rifle ammo. Also when you need to know where pills are.
Steam
Portal 2 is a delightful puzzle game that expands on the original with more tools. Another player in the mix does not add to the confusion either with smart co-op features and puzzles that are tailor-made for two players.
Steam
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is Left 4 Dead but with melee weapons. The four-player co-op lets you choose from five heroes, each with three skill trees to spec in and offering different ways to cut down the enemy.
Killing Floor 2 combines gore and metal music with an expanded perk system and plenty of weapons in this sequel. The wave-based survival game allows up to six players to work together and destroy zombies and bosses in horrifying, bloody ways.
Terraria may look like a Minecraft-like clone with pixel art, but offers plenty of content with huge bosses, multiple environments, weird weaponry, and plenty of surprises. There may be harvesting resources and crafting tools, but there is also dungeon-crawling which is much better to do with friends.

Borderlands 2: Game of the Year Edition
Borderlands 2 is wacky and action-packed. Guns literally fly out of everything and players can pick between more than four characters with unique abilities. Thanks to DLC, the game probably has a hundred hours worth of quests, side-missions, and bosses to defeat.
Payday 2: Ultimate Edition
Payday 2 launched in 2013 and has been updated with new content ever since. Four players have to work together to rob jewelry stores, banks, or cook meth in a broken down house in the middle of the woods. The game can be very satisfying when your team completes a mission without even firing a bullet.
Torchlight 2
Torchlight 2 is an action RPG that expands on what made the first game great with online multiplayer. It offers a colorful world, exotic creatures, and plenty of loot to obtain. It also has Steam Workshop support, which can change up the game dramatically with mods.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
It might be weird seeing a Call of Duty title in this list because its competitive multiplayer can outshine the rest of the package, but the Spec Ops mode is perfect for cooperative action. The time-trial and objective-based missions can be short, but difficult and require teamwork. It offers both set-pieces from the game's campaign and entirely new missions.
Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege
Rainbow Six Siege might be known for its competitive multiplayer, but its cooperative Terrorist Hunt mode can be fun in a somewhat relaxing manner. Enemies can still bombard you from any side of the map, but it is only one round against AI grunts.
Path of Exile
Path of Exile offers immensely deep skill trees and plenty of loot for the price of free in this dungeon-crawling action RPG. It is always better to loot with friends in this free-to-play adventure. The game does offer microtransactions, but they are unobtrusive and really not necessary.
Dying Light
Dying Light is a zombie game that lets you actively escape zombie hordes with parkour. Traversing the landscape and hacking away at zombies is even better when in a team of four. The game offers plenty of content, which the developer has continued to update since the game's launch in 2015.
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Wildlands
Ghost Recon Wildlands takes the co-op missions from the Advanced Warfighter games and gives you an entire world to work with. Up to four players can sneakily take out outposts with drones and silenced weapons, or blow it all to hell with rocket launchers.
Grand Theft Auto V
Grand Theft Auto V's multiplayer mode, Grand Theft Auto Online, gives you and your friends the entirety of San Andreas to complete various activities, such as taking out circle of gangs or pulling off multi-layered heists. The game has been continually updated since its launch in 2013, across two generations of systems.
The Elder Scrolls Online
The Elder Scrolls Online is a massive multiplayer online role-playing video game that had a rocky launch in 2014 with a monthly subscription to boot, but has since transitioned into a flat price with some microtransactions. The game has also received several expansion packs, and you can team up with other players to explore the continent of Tamriel.
Tom Clancy's The Division
The Division may take place in a virus-ridden New York City, but that doesn't mean you have to go it alone. In fact, a team is necessary to complete the various missions and incursions where different gear sets, high-end armor that provide special bonuses, and teamwork are necessary.
Don't Starve Together
Don't Starve Together allows two players to brave a harsh environment with dangerous creatures together. While that may not sound like fun, there are plenty of resources to harvest and tools to make not only to survive, but be sustainable.
Watch Dogs 2
Watch Dogs 2 added a four-player mode last year, allowing players to complete many of the game's activities. Or your team can cruise around virtual San Francisco in free roam and cause some trouble by hacking literally everything.
Resident Evil 5
Resident Evil 5 can be played with an AI companion, but a friend is better in this action game. It may not have the survival horror elements of past games in the franchise, but what it lacks in tension, the game makes up for it with bombastic action.
For Honor
For Honor's campaign can be played in two-player co-op, and can be a fun time with a friend watching your back. Enemies can swarm around and your AI grunts are more of a distraction than helpful in this eerily fun romp in medieval times.
Castle Crashers
Castle Crashers is a four-player 2D beat 'em up with colorful visuals and even more colorful enemies. The game offers plenty of levels to gain better gear and upgrade abilities between several characters.
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime
Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime lets four players pilot a spaceship, switching between various stations such as turrets, lasers, shields and thrusters. This game is not meant to be played alone, and can be deeply rewarding with the right crew.
Broforce
Broforce is a parody of '80s action movies with much more explosions and carnage. Players can work together to breeze through platforming levels with a variety of characters with appropriate, bombastic weapons. Be careful though, you can destroy the floor beneath you and fall to your death, or teammates' death.
