The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Overhyped Games that Lived Up to Their Hype this Generation

After the failure of the Wii U all eyes were on Nintendo’s next move with the Switch. The company was launching their new system with a brand new Zelda game, one that built ridiculous amounts of hype over the time leading up to the Switch’s release. At E3 2017 fans lined up around the convention hall to play the game, and Nintendo devoted nearly their entire streaming time to it.

Once again, Breath of the Wild would prove that Nintendo still knows how to change the game. A fantastically fresh take on the open world genre, Breath of the Wild shot up the charts to become the highest-rated Zelda game ever made, and even garnered a wealth of GOTY year awards in 2017. It remains one of the finest games on the Switch, and one of the finest open world games of all time.

As if Breath of the Wild wasn’t enough in the Switch’s first year, Nintendo also dropped a brand new 3D Mario. The mustachioed plumber’s influence on gaming is well known, and fans were overjoyed to see a new full-fledged platforming experience coming to the Switch.

On all accounts, Super Mario Odyssey pleased almost all fans. It brought the same fantastic quality platforming with an interesting new mechanic allowing him to jump on his sentient cap, Cappy, or use him to possess enemies. The mechanic completely changed the way Mario works, and its 97 on Metacritic only helps illustrate its success even more.

God of War – Overhyped Games that Lived Up to Their Hype this Generation

The God of War series had been dormant for a few years when the reimagining released in 2018. To say expectations were high would be an undertatement, as PlayStation fans expected the PS4’s very best exclusive yet.

While some may disagree on that last point, pretty much everyone can agree that God of War was one of 2018’s very best game. Sony Santa Monica took great liberties to redefine the franchise with a more thoughtful, serious tone and a completely overhauled combat system. Both aspects worked exceptionally well, and the new Norse setting was the shot in the arm God of War ended up needing.

The good news is that, for the most part, Spider-Man proved to be one of the best superhero games yet. Insomniac absolutely nailed web-swinging, and managed to even provide a truly engaging, emotional story. With an 87 on Metacritic, hopefully, Spider-Man is just an indication of things to come.

There was a lot of hype leading up to Persona 5’s release, especially because of its multiple delays, but after release the game only continued to build momentum. Plenty of reviews called it one of the greatest JRGs ever made, and its 93 on Metacritic was met by equally impressive fan praise.

Bloodborne – Overhyped Games that Lived Up to Their Hype this Generation

The Dark Souls series completely redefined the landscape of gaming, inspiring a number of copycats and new systems within games, even a sub-genre known as Souls-likes. This, along with the Lovecraftian design, is what made Bloodborne such a hotly anticipated title.

In the end, the much more aggressive take on Souls gameplay worked wonders for Bloodborne. The game helped draw in tons of fans that found the Souls games inaccessible or had never tried them. Were it not for The Witcher 3, Bloodborne easily would have swept the GOTY awards in 2015.

By adopting a first-person point of view and doubling down on horror helped Resident Evil VII hit heights the series hasn’t seen in years. With an 86 on Metacritic, and pretty stellar fan reception, this is one of the game’s that helped Capcom get back on track.
