10 Facts You Probably Didn’t Know About Super Smash Bros.

No Nintendo Characters Were Initially Involved

During the development process for the original version of Super Smash Bros., Masahiro Sakurai had originally titled the game as ‘Dragon King: The Fighting Game.’ The fighters were basic, polygonal models and had no references to Nintendo’s cast of characters.

Final Smashes

It turns out that Sakurai had come up with the idea of Final Smash attacks way before they were implemented in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. He wanted the characters to have super-powerful attacks in the first entry, but due to the limitations of the hardware at the time, it just wasn’t possible.

Thank Kojima’s Son for Solid Snake

Fans of Metal Gear Solid and Super Smash Bros. had their jaws on the floor when Solid Snake was announced as a new fighter for Smash Bros. Brawl, but it turns out that Kojima’s son was the one who really wanted Snake in the game, prompting Kojima to ask Sakurai for the character’s inclusion.

Playable Master Hand

If you’ve played through the entirety of World of Light in Smash Ultimate, then you’re well aware of the amazing boss fight that puts you in control of the famous white-gloved hand, but did you know that you can play as Master Hand in Smash Melee?

By performing some tricky maneuvers in the character selection screen, you can use him in any stage, but be careful as this glitch is known to cause issues that might freeze up your game.

King Dedede Voice Actor

Kirby’s long-time arch-nemesis, King Dedede makes some very strange noises throughout the Super Smash Bros. but did you know that Masahiro Sakurai has actually voiced the character in every entry of the fighting series?

Sakurai’s Cat

In the Pokemon Stadium 2 stage in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Smash Wii U/3DS, you can find a photo of a random cat during the ice section of the stage. This was placed in by Sakurai himself as a little easter egg.

Punching Sounds

In the original Japanese release of Super Smash Bros. for the N64, the punching and kicking sounds were very realistic. This, in turn, caused the western release to be changed, with the sound effects being more cartoony and less lifelike.

Japanese Exclusive Characters

Roy and Marth were actually planned to only be available in the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. Melee due to the Fire Emblem games lack of exposure in the west. But since they did end up making it into Melee, Fire Emblem is bigger than it ever has been here in the west.

Fan-Fiction

One fan decided to write a fan-fiction based on the Sub Space Emissary mode in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and the story managed to contain over four million words, once taking the place as the largest piece of English literature that was written by one person.

Metal Gear Solid 4’s Ending Was Spoiled

You see, Metal Gear Solid 4 released just a few months after Smash Bros. Brawl, and since Snake was a new fighter in the series, he had his own stage based on Shadow Moses Island. The stage would show off the Gekko robots which would later play a big role in Guns of the Patriots. Just the fact that Snake would return to Shadow Moses at the end of the game was already spoiler territory.
