What Is It?

Attack on Titan (known as Attack on Titan: Wings of Freedom in Europe) is a brand new action game developed by Omega Force (Dynasty Warriors, Warriors Orochi, Hyrule Warriors), and published by Koei Tecmo. In it, you will play as a member of the Scout Regiment during a brutal war between the last bastion of humanity and Titans. Titans are towering, human-like monstrosities that feed only on the flesh of humans.

The game is based on the anime that depicts the events of Hajime Isayama’s popular manga. It’s a darkly-themed title full of death and despair, pulling fans into its version of a post-apocalyptic world.

The Story

Attack on Titan follows the events of the first season of the anime. After 100 years of peace behind the walls built to defend humanity, the Titans have returned without warning and are trying to wipe out all of humanity. Having witnessed the wall being kicked down, Eren, Mikasa, Armin, and many others make a vow to take the fight directly to these towering foes. Players will witness the Titan invasion of wall Maria and embark on a quest to stop the enemy forces while playing through the point of view of several of the series’ most iconic characters.

The main story covers their training at the academy all the way to the vicious Titan fight inside of the Stohess District. For those who have already seen the anime more than enough times, there is an Epilogue that will take players beyond the events of the series, introducing some elements of the anime while providing a brand new, original story. On top of that, you can get more insight into the events of Attack on Titan through side missions, survey missions, and expeditions.

Gameplay

Although the game is developed by the studio that created the Warriors formula, Attack on Titan is very unique. You will feel at home with the large battlefields that present multiple objectives for you to manage, but there are no impossibly large armies or the need to run from one side of the map to the other. Just like in the anime, soldiers must rely on their Omni-Directional Mobility (ODM) gear to get around quickly and safely.  Titans are large and some are incredibly fast, so moving on foot would put you at a large disadvantage. ODM gear allows you to grapple and swing throughout levels (much like Spider-Man) as you use height and speed to keep out of danger.

Combat also utilizes this gear, as you must ‘anchor’ onto Titans as you search for weakpoints to exploit in order to get the kill. Fighting isn’t as fast-paced or combo-heavy as the Warriors games. Instead, you’ll have to focus and utilize your teammates if you want to bring down some of the game’s tougher Titan foes. A gear customization system allows players to change their blades, scabbards, and other gear to fine tune their gameplay. You can go for power, speed, or even a mix of both as you mix and match parts to your liking.

Missions play out on huge battlefields, with optional objectives scattered about for those looking for something extra. The variety offers basic “kill the target” objectives, base defense, escorting, and more. Thanks to the presentation, which looks as if it was ripped straight from the anime, players will feel like they’re truly inside of Attack on Titan.

Is There Multiplayer?

Slaying Titans is fun, but do you know what would make it even better? Multiplayer. Thankfully, Omega Force was one step ahead of fans and Attack on Titan offers four-player, online co-op. While you won’t be able to embark on the main narrative together, you and your friends will be able to team up for some challenging missions that will take you throughout the Attack on Titan world.

Sweetening the deal is the fact that all experience, resources, and currency earned while playing with friends also applies to your single player campaign. So no matter how you’re playing, you can reap the rewards of all of those freakish beasts you’ll slay.

When’s It Out?

Players can jump into the world of Attack on Titan on Aug. 30 on the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and PS Vita. It will be available physically and as a digital download on your respective platform of choice. We hope you’re ready to push back the Titan threat when the date arrives, because if you’re not, then you’ll certainly be met with a gruesome death.
