Best Metacritic Games of January 2019
3) Sunless Skies (87)
Sunless Skies is an adventure focused, space travel RPG that sees you head out on terrifying missions in the depths of the universe.
Exploring the beautiful skies and engaging in combat is a lot of fun, but it is Sunless Skies’ narrative focus that sets it apart from the RPG crowd. Through long sections of prose, the stories of the world and the missions you’re on are told down to the last detail.
It’s extremely well written and some of the tales are fascinating, building a world that you only want to explore more and learn more about.
Some of them are weird and confusing, of course, but anyone with a love of strange otherworldly tales will have a blast.
All of that narrative depth, on top of the wonderfully designed world and enjoyable combat, make Sunless Skies an excellent adventure. Is it any surprise that it’s among the highest-rated Metacritic games for January, then?

2) Slay the Spire (91)
Slay the Spire is a unique twist on the deck-building genre, combining its traditional elements with those of rogue-likes. By building your deck, you’re able to journey out to take on the various creatures and do exactly what the name of the game says.
Critics have praised it for a few reasons. First, the way it blends the two genres is excellent, ensuring that it remains fun and rewarding throughout.
Second, how accessible it is makes it perfect for players who aren’t versed in the potentially daunting world of deck building games. You also don’t need to spend tens of hours to be successful.
That doesn’t mean that it is a shallow experience, though, with you having to think deeply about your strategy when in combat. If the basic blend of gameplay grabs you, you can expect to spend a long time in Slay the Spire’s world.

1) Resident Evil 2 (91)
More than twenty years since Resident Evil 2 first released, Capcom’s remake finally launched and is the highest rated game of January 2019.
It’s a phenomenal remake of what was already an excellent survival horror game. The upgraded version of Raccoon City and the police station look unbelievable, the new camera setting makes the game feel more modern, and it’s terrifying throughout.
It keeps the stylings of the late 90s original, including the enjoyable puzzles and cheesy story, but makes everything feel like an advancement of the Resident Evil series.
The different enemies (especially Mr. X) keep you on your toes, not only when it comes to scares but how you’re exploring the world. It’ll be interesting to see how the best aspects of this remake and 2017’s Resident Evil 7 are combined as the series moves forward.
Not only is Resident Evil 2 the best remake we have ever seen, but it’s also one of the best survival horror games ever released.
