Invert Your Controls

This one’s completely down to personal preference, but the option’s there for those who want to do some tweaking to how their starfighters are going to handle in Star Wars Squadrons.

Players can choose to invert both their look and flight controls to make it feel more realistic. There are all kinds of other control settings you can tweak to suit your preferences.

That being said, we wouldn’t advise changing to inverted controls if you feel things are difficult to control to begin with. Handling your ship takes some time to get used to, and inverting controls can be even more problematic if you’re not used to using them.

Play in VR (If You Can!)

I’ll confess, when I first played through Star Wars Squadrons’ campaign, I just thought that the VR support was tacked-on. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

Star Wars Squadrons’ VR support is comprehensive, allowing players to sit in their chosen starfighter and blast enemies out of the sky in single-player campaign and multiplayer. Playing in VR for a few hours, I never felt motion sick, and it’s arguably the most immersive way you can experience the game.

I’d almost go as far as saying that if you’ve got a compatible VR headset, this should be the only way you play Squadrons. Its. That. Good.

Play the Campaign

Now that you’ve got your controls finetuned to how you like them, you’re all ready to dive into the dogfights. Except, before you head straight for the multiplayer modes, spend some time in the single-player campaign to begin with.

Yet another misconception I had before starting Star Wars Squadrons was that its campaign was going to feel tacked-on and largely just a tutorial for the multiplayer. So I was pleasantly surprised when the campaign stretched over 16 missions and had an engaging narrative that feels typically ‘Star Wars’ in all the right ways.

Not only does the campaign also serve as a training ground for you to master the cockpit controls of each different starfighter in the game, but some of its latter missions are exhilarating, taking cues from iconic scenes from the movies.

Plan Out Your Perfect Ship

There are a ton of starfighter parts that you can unlock and equip to each of the eight starfighters in the game that’ll tweak its stats. Changing the engine, for example, may enable you to have a faster acceleration and max speed, but reduce your maneuverability.

Taking the time to figure out which parts are best going to suit your playstyle is all part of the fun in Star Wars Squadrons. What you choose may be completely different from your friends, but that’ll work to your advantage when you begin playing together and can support one another.

Round things off by making a note of the various cosmetic options you want to use to customize your ship and begin grinding out that XP for Glory and Requisition. It’ll take you a while to unlock everything, but having an idea of what you want to unlock for your ship will save you from spending Glory and Requisition on unnecessary parts and cosmetic items.

Play a Fleet Battle Against the AI

Fleet Battle is the main multiplayer mode in Star Wars Squadrons and is a multi-stage, objective-based game mode not too dissimilar to Battlefield’s Conquest mode. It also perfectly encapsulates everything that fueled your childhood dreams of flying an X-Wing and being the hero of the day… if you’ve got the skills to pay the bills, that is.

Playing a Fleet Battle against the AI is the best way to familiarize yourself with the mode before diving into a match against other players. You’ll also earn XP in matches against the AI, making this an easy way to get some Glory and Requisition to help you customize your ship.

Join Up with Friends

Once you’re more familiar with how a game of Fleet Battles plays out, it’s time to step into the online world with some friends and do your bit to save/ destroy the galaxy far, far away.

Playing with friends always makes everything better, but it’s especially important when playing Fleet Battles. This mode requires tactical play and plenty of communication between you and your teammates.

Plus, you can start each match with “Red Leader Standing By” to really get yourself in the Star Wars zone.
