Final Fantasy XV
Final Fantasy XV’s director Hajime Tabata has gone on the record to say that his team over at Square Enix has already considered porting the next installment in the long-running series to Nintendo’s Switch. Unfortunately, though, there’s still currently no confirmed release date. Yet the fact that the game has seen the light of day on both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and is set to release both on mobile devices and on PC soon is surely a good sign. It perhaps indicates that the publisher is interested in exploring the potential of porting Final Fantasy XV content to as many platforms as possible.
We absolutely love the notion of exploring and hunting for treasure across the expansive landscape of Eos while traveling in real life, too. The hybrid functionality of the Switch would be well suited to Final Fantasy XV’s open-world structure. Side quests and Hunts would be the perfect bite-sized distractions for on-the-go gaming, while bigger main quests could be left for the big screen back home. Here’s hoping that Tabata and his team are able to successfully fit XV’s massive world between the Switch’s Joy-Cons sooner rather than later.
Dark Souls Trilogy
Fans of From Software’s Dark Souls trilogy were excited to see the developer’s name listed as third-party support for the Nintendo Switch during its reveal last year, but we’re still waiting for a formal announcement.
According to a rumor from gaming outlet Let’s Play Video Games last December, From Software actually already has a build of Dark Souls 3 running on the Switch that they feel comfortable with. Handled by a small team, the developer is supposedly still waiting on sales data to determine if re-releasing the game alongside its two prior entries would be financially viable.
We think Dark Souls would be a sweet match for Nintendo’s portable console, giving players the freedom to tackle quests over and over again without worrying about time constraints. After all, you’re going to be dying… a lot. Daunting levels might seem a little less intimidating when they can be taken with anywhere. It remains to be seen exactly what From Software has in store for Switch owners come next year, but the thought of seeing “You Died” in grim red writing on our Nintendo Switch has us super excited.
Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
With both Resident Evil Revelations games headed to the Switch later this month, complete with exclusive mini-games that earn players additional BP, it seems likely that developer Capcom is testing the waters to see whether bringing across its latest title is viable. Adding further weight to that possibility, Capcom actually asked Nintendo to increase the console’s RAM during its development so that its RE Engine could run properly. Surely, then, it’s only a matter of time until we see Resident Evil 7: Biohazard on Nintendo’s latest hardware?
Met with critical acclaim earlier this year when it released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, the game will be getting the Gold Edition treatment later this year, and we’d love to see this come to the Nintendo Switch, too. It would not only provide the platform with another horror title in its library (a genre in which the console is sorely lacking in at the moment) but could work well as a portable experience similar in vein to the aforementioned Revelations games. Particularly so, considering the potential for Capcom to add mini-games into the fold. With a good pair of headphones, Resident Evil 7 on Switch could prove that it’s just as scary on the go as it is at home.
South Park: The Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole
Fresh off the critical success that was Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, Ubisoft might be willing to consider porting some of its games over to Nintendo’s newest console. Namely, it could start with both its critically acclaimed South Park games, The Stick of Truth and The Fractured but Whole. From a gameplay perspective, these story-driven titles would work really well on the Switch, with their simple RPG mechanics making for enjoyable sessions on the commute home. In fact, we’d suggest the hilarious boss fights would be the perfect way to kick-start one’s day before arriving at work. Just remember, these are R rated games, so don’t let the boss see anything!
Presumably, both would be easily capable of running on Switch’s hardware, and with such positivity surrounding the most recent entry in the series, it seems like a good fit. Given Ubisoft’s comments about the potential of the platform, it’s likely we’ll see the publisher’s relationship with the house of Mario grow even further.
Super Smash Bros.
With Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Pokken Tournament DX each re-releasing on the Switch after their debut on the Wii U, one can’t help but wonder why the latest iteration of Super Smash Bros. still hasn’t so much as even been announced for the Switch yet. Given the massive fan base the series has managed to accrue throughout the years, it seems like a no-brainer that, should Nintendo be willing to re-release Wii U games on the Switch, another version of the most recent Smash Bros. would see the light of a day.
Seeing as how the last Smash Bros. was available both for Wii U and 3DS, the Switch version of the game could work as an amalgamation of the two. The Switch’s hybrid design and the fact that it works so well as a local multiplayer machine seems like an absolutely perfect fit. Sure, they might not have the slick ergonomics of the Gamecube controller, but the Joy-Con’s two-button layout would still work well enough for multiplayer sessions on-the-go!
No word has been yet as to when fans can see a port of the game come to the hybrid or if they’ll ever see it come to the console at all. For now, the best fans can do is keep their fingers crossed.
