Every Retro Game Coming to Current Generation Platforms in September 2018
Switch
Last month’s retro offerings on modern consoles was a case of quality over quantity. This month, for the Switch, it is very much about the quantity, although there are definitely some excellent games in the bunch.
The reason for the abundance of retro games is thanks to the launch of Nintendo Switch Online later this month. A membership to the service will be required to play certain Switch games online going forward, and it will also come with 20 free NES games that you can play right off the bat, with more added regularly. So far, we know of 10 of the free games, which will include some timeless classics, such as Super Mario Bros. 3 and The Legend of Zelda. There’s a chance that we may find out the identity of the remaining 10 games in the upcoming Nintendo Direct.
September will also see the release of the Sega Ages lineup, which will bring some of Sega’s best retro games to the Nintendo Switch. The Sega Ages lineup is currently set to include 15 Master System and Genesis games and will start this month with the speedy platformer Sonic the Hedgehog and shoot ’em up Thunder Force IV.

PS4/Xbox One/PC
Unlike the Switch’s retro selection this month, other systems are almost devoid of retro re-releases. With huge AAA games like Dragon Quest XI, Spider-Man, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider releasing this month, that’s probably a smart move from publishers.
There is, however, one retro game heading to PS4 and PC that definitely deserves a mention: Zone of the Enders: The 2nd Runner MARS. Even though the game received a HD remaster on the PS3 and Xbox 360, Konami has decided to go ahead with another remaster of the second game, this time with 4K visuals and VR support. The original PS2 version of the game ran at a lowly 480i, and it can’t be understated how much of a leap in visual fidelity this new 2160p version is over the original. But if you really want to change the game, you’re going to want to strap on your VR headset of choice. Zipping around as a mech is fun enough in third-person, and I can’t begin to imagine how crazy it’s going to be in virtual reality.
