Sable

Promising New Indie Games Shown at E3 2018

Sable is a brand new indie title that was shown off during the PC Gaming Show and it’s being developed by Shedworks. As soon as I saw the gameplay trailer and the synopsis to the story, I immediately thought about the vast and endless deserts that are present in some of the Star Wars films. With a hover bike in tow with this open-ended setting, the possibilities are endless.

Sable is a coming-of-age tale of discovery on an alien planet, which just looks extremely impressive and visually appealing. The structures present and the desert itself looks like a comic book come to life, with hand-drawn animations and all. Exploring this seemingly quiet planet and its history reminds me of something like Journey, but hopefully Sable’s gameplay will be on par with its unique art-style.

Sable will be coming in 2019 to Mac and Windows, and afterwards, will also be coming to consoles.

Afterparty

Promising New Indie Games Shown at E3 2018

Playing as recently deceased best buds, Milo and Lola, the two of you have to literally outdrink Satan himself to escape the clutches of the underworld and gain re-entry to earth. Night School Studios’ last game, Oxenfree, had different conversations and plot points depending on how you responded to dialog choices during and Afterparty will have all of that as well.

Alcoholic beverages play a big part when it comes to making decisions as well, one drink might boost your confidence, while a different drink might make you make bad decisions, or you can just black out and embarrass yourself altogether. This drinking mechanic plays a big role in the story of Afterparty, and if you ask me, is incredibly interesting and adds to the charm that the title oozes.

Afterparty will be launching in 2019.

Tunic

When it comes to it, Tunic is a Legend of Zelda game for Xbox One players, just look at that cute little fox – he looks just like an animal version of Link himself, no? Well, Tunic gives you nothing but a sword and shield and throws you into terrifying dungeons with puzzles and tons of enemies to defeat.

While Tunic may look like a Zelda game in theory, the combat is a bit more intense than Nintendo’s action-adventure franchise. You have the ability to roll out of harms way during combat, and the sword fighting can get pretty technical, almost Dark Souls-esque (I had to make the comparison), and the in-game text is all presented to you with pictures and a language that’s specific to Tunic, adding a bit of mystery to the world that you’re exploring.

Tunic looks to be a promising title for the Xbox One, and we can’t wait to play it once it launches next year.

Sea of Solitude

In Sea of Solitude (S.O.S.), humans turn into monsters when they reach a peak point of loneliness, which is the theme of S.O.S. Seeing how different types of people experience loneliness is what S.O.S. is all about and young woman who is going through so many dark emotions that eventually turns her into a monster and she then tries to find out why this has happened to her.

With its vibrant cel-shaded art-style, S.O.S. manages to look extremely bright and colorful, but the dark colors in the game can really bring home the sense of fear, depression, and other themes that developer Jo-Mei presents to us.

Sea of Solitude will be releasing early 2019.

Overcooked 2

Promising New Indie Games Shown at E3 2018

The sequel to 2016’s frantic, multiplayer cooking game, Overcooked, has been announced and it brings back all of the zaniness that the first game offered but this time with online multiplayer and tons of new features.

Overcooked has you and 3 other people working together in a small kitchen, where you then have to communicate and move fast in order to succeed. Overcooked 2 promises new recipes to cook, never-before-seen maps, new cooks to play as, and different game mechanics, like being able to throw food across the kitchen to each other – let’s hope no knives can be thrown, that’s just dangerous.

Overcooked 2 is coming to Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on Aug 7.

Desert Child

Racing, hoverbikes, RPG elements, and a pixel art-style? Sign us up! Desert Child is set on a ruined Earth, an Earth that is about to explode and the only way to get out of it is to win the Solar Championship cup. Whoever wins the hoverbike races will be grant access to the planet Mars which is your only ticket out of Earth.

When you’re not playing with the deep racing mechanics that Desert Child has to offer, you’ll be exploring an overworld where you can take on side jobs, bounties, and drug deals – all to get some cash to upgrade your hoverbike.

Did we mention that it has a super chill and laid back sci-fi soundtrack? Desert Child will surely be quite the experience once it launches later this year.

Session

Are you one of the many still holding out hope that Skate 4 sees the light of day? Well, while we wait for that to probably never come out, this new simulation skateboarding game ‘Session’ might be the next best thing.

Indie developer, creā-ture Studios, is bringing their skateboarding title to PC and Xbox One next year and it plays just like the skate series with each analog stick being used to control each foot. Pulling of sweet jumps and rad grinds is what Session is all about, and when you’re not spraining your ankles attempting to do these sweet moves, you can play the role of cameraman and upload/edit footage that you can share with your skate crew.

Session is scheduled to launch in 2019.
