Blair Witch
Blair Witch actually released on Xbox One and PC earlier this year, but the horror title finally makes its way to PS4 in December 2019.
Developed by Bloober Team, the same dev behind Observer and Layers of Fear, Blair Witch takes place two years after the events of the original Blair Witch Project film.
You play as Ellis Lynch, a former police officer and veteran who joins the search for a missing nine-year-old boy in the Black Hills Forest.
The game heavily focuses on survival horror and stealth, forcing you to contend with shadowy creatures as you investigate. There’s a found-footage element with collectible cassette tapes, and Ellis’s dog, Bullet, also heavily factors into gameplay by letting you give him commands.
Blair Witch may not be the best horror game out there, but it does some interesting things, and if you’re hankering for a unique horror experience, it might just fit the bill.
Star Ocean: First Departure R
Star Ocean has had a rough go of things lately, with the less than well-received fifth entry, Star Ocean: Integrity and Faithlessness. While the future of the series is still in question, one thing that has been great are the recent remasters. The latest of those on PS4 is Star Ocean: First Departure R, a gorgeous remaster of the very first game.
The biggest change here is fantastic new illustrations and character portraits by Katsumi Enami, the artist responsible for character illustrations in Star Ocean 4.
On top of this, the game has been converted from SD to HD, and a few game balance adjustments have been made to make combat more accessible.
First Departure R looks like a great way to re-experience a JRPG classic, or jump in for the first time.
Shovel Knight Showdown and King of Cards
Shovel Knight fans get a nice holiday treat on PS4 this year, with not one but two brand new experiences.
The first of those is Shovel Knight: King of Cards, the brand new expansion focused on King Knight. The new story expansion has plenty of platforming action, but also a brand new collectible card game called Joustus.
Meanwhile, Shovel Knight Showdown is a four-player brawler that lets you play as over 16 characters, many controllable for the first time. There’s a wealth of multiplayer modes, as well as a story mode for each character.
Showdown comes as a free update for all current versions of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, or as a standalone game.
Wattam
Katamari Damacy is one of the biggest cult classics out there, and it’s creator, Keita Takahashi, has a unique sense of humor that’s on display the entire time.
That unique humor once again returns with Wattam on PS4, a game that looks equally ridiculous and over-the-top.
In Wattam, the whole point is to travel to different planets and befriend the weird creatures, and things, that live there, including trees, rocks, poop (yes really), and more.
You’ll need to hold hands with these creatures, solve puzzles, play minigames, and plenty of other things.
Yes it looks weird, but what else would you expect from the creator of Katamari Damacy?
