Final Fantasy VII on the Nintendo Switch marks the first time this classic masterpiece has ever landed on a Nintendo platform. While it’ far from the upcoming remake Square Enix has in store, this updated version comes with the same grit and adventure that all fans know and love.

The story follows a troubled ex-mercenary named Cloud Strife who gets caught up in the struggle against a deranged killer, Sephiroth, who has plans of destroying the world. Final Fantasy VII is home to a ton of loveable and memorable characters and houses an intuitive turn-based combat system.

You can customize your characters with different skills and magic, giving you the freedom to build your own team.

Final Fantasy VII on Nintendo Switch also comes with some handy features, including a near-invincible mode and a x3 turbo mode (which every JRPG needs, really). Both longtime veterans and new fans of the series will definitely find something to love with the Nintendo Switch port.

Wargroove

Chucklefish’s tactical turn-based RPG has finally found its way to the Nintendo Switch this year after nearly a year of delays. The wait has definitely been worth it, however, considering how it’s one of the best role-playing games on the console this year.

Wargroove takes place on an island named Aurania, where a war between the living and undead are brewing. Players actively take part in the struggle by commanding a handful of different, diverse troops around the battlefield to rout and defeat the enemy.

This Nintendo Switch game has tons of different landmarks and locations that serve as your battlefield, and it’s a real treat watching your gorgeously-animated 2D warriors in combat.

Tetris 99

You’ve seen battle royale shooters, but nothing quite as close to Tetris 99. This Nintendo Switch spin-off marks the first time the series has touched the battle royale genre by pitting you against up to 98 other players.

The idea is to outsmart everyone and clears blocks as fast as you can, making it even harder for your opponents to keep up.

Tetris 99 is probably one of the most complex spin-offs yet, forcing you to think under pressure as your opponents will constantly try to attack you. If you don’t act fast, you’ll find your board stacked to the brim with garbage tiles.

For everything it brings to the table, Tetris 99 has become one of the most popular Nintendo Switch games of 2019. The best part about it all is that it’s free, too.

Yoshi’s Crafted World

Yoshi’s finally gotten his time to shine on the Nintendo Switch this year with an adorable new game. Yoshi’s Crafted World is a creative side-scrolling adventure that makes the most out of literal scraps. The world is molded out of handcrafted materials, and it’s a real treat watching Yoshi stroll around.

Like always, you can use his tongue to gobble up enemies and turn them into eggs. Thee projectiles are perfect for knocking out enemies and taking out other targets from the distance for some sweet coins and other collectibles.

Moreover, Yoshi can now swap the map around and see the area from a whole different perspective.

Yoshi’s Crafted World adds another adorable game to the Nintendo Switch and is perfect for those who’re looking for another relaxing journey.

Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes

Travis is back and better than ever on the Nintendo Switch with his spin-off adventure, No More Heroes.

This time around, he’s teaming up with his archnemesis, Badman, as they sweep through a world inside a video game console. No More Heroes has levels inspired by different gaming genres and it’s up to both characters to fight the bugs inside and find a way out.

The Nintendo Switch game has tons of unique gimmicks and mini-games in each level, surprising you with something new each time. Since both Travis and Badman are here, you can enjoy some couch co-op fun and clear the game with a friend.

This spin-off is far from the original games, but it offers its own special touch that’s hard not to love.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is an enhanced Wii U port that’s found its way on the Nintendo Switch. The game has brought along all of the original platforming action, starring Mario and a handful of his friends.

This time around, however, the Deluxe version introduces the Luigi U expansion as well as a new playable character named Toadette.

On top of that, she also comes with her own item called the Super Crown, which turns her into Peachette, granting her a double jump and some nifty floating abilities. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe comes with over 160 platforming levels that you can tackle with your friends, hence what makes the game so popular.

All these features make the Nintendo Switch port the greatest way to play this Wii U classic.

Baba Is You

Baba is You might look simple on the outside, but there’s a lot more going on than meets the eye. This tricky puzzle game has you literally breaking the rules to reach the next stage.

Each level has a host of different tiles and words you can manipulate around the map, changing the way the level works out.

It’s all about using your head and finding possibly some of the strangest ways to solve a puzzle and break the rules. Baba Is You is another solid entry on the Nintendo Switch thanks to its mind-boggling yet addicting roadblocks.
