The Game is Ending
With each passing year, Game of Thrones fan theories get more and more complex. As the books and show each reveal their own details, we have more to work with. With only two seasons and 13 total episodes left of the show, fans have begun speculating about the end of the series and what may happen.
While the series’ end will likely be dramatic, epic, and bloody, the lead up to all of that will likely be bizarre in its own way, and some of the series’ most devoted fans have already thought up how it could all play out. We’re going to run through five of the most insane Game of Thrones fan theories that look at the fate of Westeros and how all of the series’ prophecies could come true.
Jon Snow and Daenerys Clash for the Iron Throne
The Game of Thrones series is brought together under the banner of A Song of Ice and Fire. This title has always held some mystery, but this particular fan theory looks to uncover it. We know that Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen will likely be big players in the series’ conclusion, but this theory posits that they will not be allies, but rather sworn enemies.
Jon represents the north, or ice, while Dany is synonymous with dragons and fire. So the series will end in a bloody conflict between two Targaryens, one representing the cold and the other the heat. They are two sides of a coin and the two characters with large, unrelenting armies behind them.
Azor Ahai Will be Reborn
The fanatical religion of the Lord of Light hinges on the return of a being known as Azor Ahai, who will be reborn and lead the fight against evil. Both Jon and Dany have been reborn in some way over the course of the series. Daenerys stepped into the funeral pyre of her late husband and emerged the Mother of Dragons, while Jon was literally brought back from the dead by Melisandre.
Either one of these characters could turn out to be this prophesied hero who will fight back the walkers and claim the throne. Azor Ahai has been mentioned constantly since the Lord of Light was first introduced way back in season 2. It makes sense that his rebirth could play a major role in the series’ end.
Tyrion is a Targaryen
The Targaryen family crest is a fearsome three-headed dragon. Fans have long speculated that there are three dragon riders that symbolize the heads. If this is true, then after the season six finale it’s pretty safe to say that Jon and Daenerys are locks. Now we have to figure out who the third rider might be. There are a couple of options, but a lot of signs point to Tyrion.
We know from the books that the Mad King pursued Tyrion’s mother, Joanna, and in season six he was shown to approaching the dragons without getting his face burned clean off. It might turn out that Tyrion is yet another secret Targaryen and he’ll take to the skies with his kin: Jon and Dany. The three dragon riders will conquer the seven kingdoms and reclaim the throne that many believe belongs to the Targaryens.
Jaime Lannister the Valonqar
When Cersei was younger, she was told that her children will all die before her and she will die at the hands of the Valonqar. In High Valyrian, Volanqar means little brother. While many might immediately think of Tyrion for this role – he does have a lot of reasons to kill Cersei – the more shocking option is Jaime. He is younger than Cersei by mere minutes and has been growing more and more wary of her ways over the last couple of seasons.
Jaime has lost his hand but will be made Hand of the King by his sister, which will symbolically replace his hand. His hand will be replaced with more than symbolism, though, after he kills Cersei, fulfills his role as Valonqar, and is given a new, flaming hand which will be used as a tool to wage war against the white walkers.
Cleganebowl
The Clegane brothers, also known as the Hound and the Mountain, aren’t exactly close. In fact, they are so distanced from one another that they want to murder each other. While the Mountain is still standing by Cersei’s side, the Hound has allied himself with the Brotherhood Without Banners, and recent trailers show him meeting Jon Snow. The two brothers are now on vastly different sides of the war, which will only help spur them into combat.
Clegaenebowl revolves around this battle of brothers, hypothesizing that the two will finally face off and, in an interpretation of the Valonqar prophecy, that the Hound will come out on top, which does make sense as he is the more likable character. This sibling rivalry has been an ongoing focus of Game of Thrones since season one, so seeing it come to a bloody end would be incredibly satisfying to watch.
