The Bigger Game – Horizon Zero Dawn
PS Plus Free Games Predictions
Every month, a few free games are gifted to subscribers of Sony’s online PS Plus program. While the official list from Sony for February 2020 has yet to be released, we have a few predictions as to what those free games might be.
For the previous month of January 2020 we got some great titles, like Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection which includes the first three Uncharted games, as well as Goat Simulator which provides a healthy dose of whacky gameplay.
Usually one larger game headlines the list, and it’s looking like Horizon Zero Dawn is a promising AAA inclusion.
It’s been almost three years since Horizon Zero Dawn released in February 2017, a very standard length of time for Sony to start considering if for PS Plus.
However the biggest indicator that Horizon Zero Dawn will be on the free games list next month or likely sometime very soon is the fact that it’s price has been drastically reduced over the last year or so, and it often goes on sale at ridiculously low prices such as $9.99 over the course of Black Friday this year.
Another Guerrilla Games title has also been included on PS Plus in the past, being Killzone Mercenary in April 2015.
Since Horizon Zero Dawn is a Sony published title this makes it much more likely it will come to PS Plus in the future as well. It’s safer for Sony to use exclusive titles and in the past it has shown it is willing to do so, with games like the Uncharted trilogy last month, The Last of Us Remastered in October 2019, Until Dawn in July 2017, and many more.
The Smaller Game – Firewatch
PS Plus Free Games Predictions
Usually a smaller indie makes the list as well, like Goat Simulator last month. For February 2020, we predict Firewatch from developer Campo Santo.
The last time we predicted Firewatch for PS Plus was back in May 2018. At that point the game had been out for a couple years after first releasing in February 2016. Now it has been out for almost four years, and it’s honestly surprising it has never been offered on PS Plus in that time frame.
It’s true that Firewatch often goes on sale as most indies that have been out for a couple years or more usually do, but what makes Firewatch a good choice is it really feels like a classic PS Plus pick based on Sony’s past choices.
There are tons of other games that are similar in tone and gameplay to Firewatch that have been included on PS Plus in the past. Titles like Gone Home offered on PS Plus in June 2016, RiMe on PS Plus in February 2018, and What Remains of Edith Finch in May 2019.
Sony loves to includes simple indies where a protagonist is exploring an artful world, which are sometimes referred to as ‘walking simulators’. In fact, when Firewatch first released this sparked online conversations to the potential of walking simulators with little gameplay have to tell great stories like Firewatch was able to.
It’s only a matter of time before Firewatch is free on PS Plus, and February 2020 seems like a good of time as any.
Make sure to check back in the next week or so for the official release of the free games PS Plus list from Sony itself.
