While Ubisoft provided several reasons to be excited for their lineup this year, nothing could compare to the unveiling of Beyond Good & Evil 2 at their E3 press conference. If you haven’t seen the trailer, you should check it out right now. After nearly 15 years since the release of the first game, fans will finally be able to revisit the beloved universe. However, things aren’t going to be as fans initially expected.

Instead of being a sequel to the classic game, Beyond Good & Evil 2 takes place before Jade was born. This is definitely an interesting approach, as it can help to set the stage and add some depth to the narrative of the original game. It’s not entirely clear how far before her birth this takes place, but the cities players will visit are full of life and diversity, as well as highly advanced technology.

The World

While the world, or worlds, players will be able to visit in Beyond Good & Evil 2 aren’t ready to be fully unveiled, the initial trailer gave us a glimpse at what we can expect. The opening provides a shot of a vertical city, with towering buildings and tons of passages to get through. This is the core design of the game, with height and options that make it all feel alive.

Also, you won’t have just one world to visit, and not even just one location on each. Players will explore System 3, a far distant solar system. You’ll pilot massive spaceships as you explore new locales. Some are rife with exploration, others will be incredibly dangerous. Only a few glimpses were shown, but Beyond Good & Evil 2 definitely looks to be on one seriously massive scale.

The Story

The world of Beyond Good & Evil was always one that had an underlying darkness to it. Society isn’t kind to all, and it appears that has been the case even way before Jade was born. With society being multi-ethnic and multicultural, you would expect hatred to be low. Humanity is living among one another with ease. However, corporations have something else in mind. They create hybrids, combinations of different animals and even people, that are enslaved and forced to work towards the goal of taking over the stars.

Players will join a crew of unique characters that will fight against the rise of slavery, corruption, and corporate control. Players will have to travel through the stars in order to find whatever it is that they need in order to claim freedom that all living beings deserve.

Gameplay and Online

Beyond Good & Evil 2 will allow players to take on the universe with friends in what is described as a “vast and seamless online playground.” Not much was shared on how the game actually plays, though we can assume it will at least be somewhat similar to the original game. Still, it will be interesting to see just how you can team up with others as you tackled System 3.

The game is still being developed, though, and players will have a chance to actually help the final product go into fruition through something Ubisoft is calling the Space Monkey Program. All you have to do is head over to this site to sign up and wait to answer the call of duty. You’ll become a part of history as you help to make this long awaited release come to life.

There’s no release date for Beyond Good & Evil 2 just yet, but actually seeing the game and being able to sign up to help make it a reality sure feels great. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as more details roll out for what is going to quickly become one of Ubisoft’s most highly-anticipated titles.
