6 Things You Should Know Before Destiny 2’s Open Beta Tomorrow

Let's get you up to speed, Guardian.

destiny 2, ps4 pro

The Destiny 2 closed beta has been running quite successfully on both the PS4 and Xbox One. Those who pre-ordered the upcoming sequel have had an opportunity to try out a path in each of the six launch subclasses (which includes the three brand-new ones), as well as try their hand at Crucible and even an interesting Strike mission. Starting tomorrow, July 21, at 10 AM PT/1 PM ET, players who didn’t pre-order the game but would like to try out the action can access the open beta. Before jumping into the fray and testing your Guardian’s might against the Cabal onslaught, there are a few quick things to keep in mind so you don’t find yourself overly frustrated come tomorrow.

Download Difficulty

The marketplace for your preferred platform of choice (PS4 or Xbox One) will probably be receiving a heavy strain once downloads for the Destiny 2 open beta open up. This happens whenever a popular game releases, so remember to be patient. Nothing is broken, there are just a lot of eager Guardians out there who really want to save the world.

Server Woes

The beta exists for both Bungie to see what the community thinks about the gameplay and to test out the online environment for server issues, latency, capacity, etc. That means logging into Destiny 2 may not be as instant as you’d like, and you may get the boot while playing. The game isn’t broken, though, this needs to happen so that Bungie knows what to improve. Just roll with the punches.

Unlocking Modes

You must beat Homecoming, the opening story mission, with each class that you want to use. Just because you unlocked Crucible and the Strike with your Warlock, doesn’t mean you can instantly jump in with a Titan. So if you know you’re going to want to be switching them out and trying all available subclasses, we suggest running the story mission with all three first.

Not Everyone Is New in the Crucible

You may come across players with weapons and gear you haven’t seen yet while venturing into one of Destiny 2’s PvP modes in the open beta. This doesn’t mean there’s no balance, you just need to earn some loot. Things will even out after a few matches and you find a gun you really like.

Two Ways to Get Loot

You get two loot drops for every completion of the Inverted Spire Strike (a piece of armor and a weapon). You get one piece for every Crucible match completed even if you lose (weapon or armor). While there isn’t a large amount available, there’s enough to get a feel for what the game has to offer, including new weapon types like the linear fusion rifle, grenade launcher, and submachine gun.

Use the Forums

The Destiny 2 open beta is a demo that helps Bungie figure out what needs fixing. While some things can be easily monitored by the development team (such as server performance), other things require that we, the community, speak up. However, there’s a proper channel to do just that. If you have a question, complaint, suggestion, or anything else that can be tossed at those creating Destiny 2, use the official forums. You can, of course, shout into the endless void that is the interwebs, but the forums provide your best chance at being heard.

With that being said, get ready, Guardians. You’re about to experience the next phase of Destiny and all it has to offer. Be safe and may your Fireteam stay forever strong.
