5 Ways Bungie Can Improve Destiny 2’s Seasonal Model Going Forward

Get Rid of Seasonal Mods Slots And/Or Remove Elemental Affinity

Recommended Videos

The seasonal mod slot in Destiny 2 is a nice idea in theory, allowing older armor to retain some usage/purpose over time. The problem is that it’s just not sustainable.

Armor space is already becoming a major issue and it has gotten worse this season with the new charged with light mechanic added in Season of Dawn.

These mods allow for some very creative builds that are very fun to use, but you need to have multiple different armor sets with the correct elemental affinities, on top of the general armor sets you would have for something like PvP and raiding.

If every season is going to just keep adding more and more armor sets that we have to grind for with the correct element/stats etc., there’s going to come a point where players are just not going to have the space in their inventory for all the sets they want to regularly have to use.

Having to dig out an app on your phone or return to the Tower to constantly swap gear into your inventory is going to get real taxing in the future if it isn’t already that way for some players.

There are two solutions for this. One: remove the seasonal armor slot and just allow players to equip mods on any armor they want so they don’t need to grind for a new set every season, just the new mods.

Or the other option is to remove elemental affinities altogether. This seems less likely to happen because Bungie appears to be quite married to this new elemental affinity system and removing it would probably take a lot of time.

But, if it was removed, you at least wouldn’t need an arc, solar and void version of every armor set you want to use to cover all the different weapon mods you’ll need which would also help with inventory space a lot.

Make Special Ammo Rounds Apply Across Both Legendary & Exotics

The seasonal artifact’s focus on a select few weapons to create a forced meta of sorts in high-end PvE content is not beloved by all. Personally though, I do like the system as I like being forced to be a bit more creative about the weapons I use season to season as I’m the type of person that would otherwise use my five or six favorite weapons and nothing else.

All of that said, a major problem is that exotics are not able to equip the special ammo mods that are in cycle each season. Some newer exotics such as Eriana’s Vow and Divinity have the special ammo innate as a trait, but anything pre-Shadowkeep is missing it.

The simplest (at least on paper) way to fix this would be to remove the perk as an actual mod that you have to equip onto your weapon, and instead just have it automatically apply to any weapon within the archetype when you activate the mod on your seasonal artifact.

This not only allows some other exotics to get more use, but it also allows legendary weapons to equip normal mods again instead of being forced to use the artifact mods.

Keep Some Exotics Secret

Destiny 2’s Corridors of Time puzzle was a spectacle and a half. These are the kind of moments that will stick with the community forever. However, the reward spoiled the climatic moment of when players finally reached the end of the maze for the first time.

Bastion is a cool weapon that is solid in both PvE and PvP. Knowing it was coming well ahead of time via the roadmap though was a huge bummer, especially given the secretive nature of the Corridors of Time puzzle. Prior to this event, anytime Bungie did something secret like this, it led to a surprising reward.

I understand the need for Bungie to market some new weapons to entice players to pick up the season and also communicate to players what they will get with their money.

I do also think though that most players could live with at least one of the two or three exotics added each season being redacted and leaving an element of surprise on the table if Bungie wanted to go that route.

Experiment With Crazy Battle Seasonal Content

The whole Sundial battle content in Destiny 2: Season of Dawn is fine. It’s a major improvement over Season of the Undying’s Vex Invasion, but it’s debatable if it’s better than The Menagerie. They are very similar at the end of the day.

I think most players can stomach the Sundial, but if next season adds yet another Menagerie variant it’s going to start to get very stale.

If the seasonal battle content is going to be removed each season, then Bungie should feel especially free to get weird with it. As long as it’s rewarding, which all of these Menagerie variants have been thus far, I think players could live with some funky ideas from time to time.

A return to the Prison of Elders would be neat for one season, or just a straight up Gears of War style horde mode. Borrow ideas from other similar games such as MMORPGs. This is the perfect time for Bungie to try stuff out and see what sticks for consideration for future permanent content whether it’s another Destiny 2 expansion or perhaps Destiny 3 if that’s still going to be a thing.

Add More Challenging Content

Neither Season of the Undying or Season of Dawn have added anything that is particularly challenging. As a fairly hardcore player, I’m finding the difficulty of Destiny 2 to be lacking, especially now that the power levels keep going up.

I don’t believe that Bungie should exclusively cater to hardcore players, but adding something new each season that is at least a higher power level than the Nightfall and Nightmare Hunts with some exclusive loot would go a long way to keeping the most dedicated players busy in between new raids.
