Gran Turismo Sport – Limited Edition Bundle
Collector’s editions are an addiction in the gaming industry. From figures to soundtracks to exclusive DLC, these limited versions of games make the perfect addition to any lonely desk, shelf, or cabinet. This being said, publishers sometimes offer much more than just trinkets with their collector’s editions, selling bizarre packages to the effect of just generating a little publicity. It should go without saying that most – if not all – items of this list are extremely expensive, so read on at your wallet’s own risk.
The most recent entry here (and the collector’s edition that serves as this list’s inspiration) is the Gran Turismo Sport Limited Edition Bundle. Offered by Sony Taiwan and costing around $46,600, the package includes a PlayStation 4 Pro, a PlayStation VR headsdet, a racing chair and steering wheel setup, a Sony 4K TV, 12 months of PlayStation Plus, and a copy of the game. The cherry on the cake is a limited edition 2018 Mazda MX-5 adorned with PlayStation Logos. Yeah, this bundle includes a car.
If you’re on the edge of your seat now wondering how you can buy it, unfortunately you’re out of luck. The Gran Turismo Sport Limited Edition Bundle was bought by a car collector in Taiwan mere seconds after the announcement, and now presumably sits safety in the comfort of his private garage. It’s a shame for the rest of us, as Sony doesn’t package 12 months of PlayStation Plus in games very often.
Dying Light – My Apocalypse Edition
The ultra-rare Dying Light – My Apocalypse Collector’s Edition was best fit to serve any collector’s fear of an impending Armageddon. Once available only through European retailer GAME, the bundle included parkour lessons with Ampisound (the team responsible for the game’s Dying Light Parkour POV video), the opportunity to have your face in the game, four copies of Dying Light, a trip to developer Techland’s studio in Wroclaw, Poland, to meet the team behind the title, your face skinned onto your Night Hunter character model, Dying Light branded night vision goggles, adult diapers for the night portions of the game, two Razer Tiamat headphones, and a human-sized Volatile figurine to use as a deterrent on human raiders.
As if that wasn’t enough, the centerpiece of the My Apocalypse Collector’s Edition was the custom-built zombie apocalypse-proofed house made by Tiger Log Cabins that came “fully equipped” with live-in amenities like a TV, an Xbox One, and a sound system. For £250,000 or about $386,000, it seems as though the bundle was too pricey for doomsday believers out there, and this edition of the game winded up not selling. Maybe it would’ve been more successful if only the diapers and a copy of the game were included.
GRID 2 – The Mono Edition
Gran Turismo Sport must have gotten its inspiration from the GRID 2 Mono Edition, as the two collector’s editions are similar in an outlandish vehicle kind of way. Evidenced in the picture above, the Mono Edition not only included a copy of the game and a PlayStation 3 system to play it on, but an actual BAC Mono supercar, too. The £125,000 (or $188,700) bundle allowed whoever was lucky enough to buy it the ability to customize the vehicle at the BAC factory plus design the racing suit for those inevitable track days.
Unlike the aforementioned Gran Turismo Sport Mazda MX-5 bundle, this edition has yet to sell as of the time of this writing. In fact, if you’ve got the cash and/or are really into supercars, you can presumably still contact someone to make your dream come true. If you’re having any doubts, don’t worry – despite having the ability to go from 0 to 60 m.p.h. in just 2.8 seconds, the BAC Mono is road-legal.
Dying Light: The Following – Spotlight Edition
Techland managed to improve Dying Light in its expansion pack The Following, especially in regards to how publicity stunts concerning collector’s editions are handled. Indeed, this collector’s edition, appropriately titled the Spotlight Edition, surprisingly managed to outdo its predecessor the My Apocalypse Collector’s Edition by a couple of million dollars, offering one lucky buyer the chance to star in a Dying Light movie among many other luxurious things.
Aside from a speaking role in this film, the bundle included stunt and parkour training, a professional acting coach, your very own trailer on set, a screening tour, off-road driving lessons, a zombie makeup session, a copy of the original script, ten VIP tickets to the movie’s premiere, a role as the voice of Kyle Crane in a special edition of Dying Light, and four copies of Dying Light: The Following – Enhanced Edition. For the low price of 10 million dollars, it’s a bit of a mystery as to why this package never had a buyer.
Saints Row IV – Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition
Saints Row IV’s Super Dangerous Wad Wad Edition perhaps has the best name on this list as it perfectly encapsulates the bundle’s bizarre contents. Once exclusively available through European retailer GAME, should someone had realistically wanted to purchase this collector’s edition, they’d have to have sent an email directly to publisher Deep Silver. From there, all sorts of legalities and background checks would’ve had to take place.
What exactly did the Wad Wad Edition have that made it so dangerous, you ask? The bundle included a copy of the game, a full-sized replica of the series’ Dubstep Gun, a full day of spy training, a trip to space with Virgin Galactic, one year’s membership to the E25 Super Car Club, a Lamborghini Gallardo, any plastic surgery you choose, a shopping spree with a personal shopper, a stay at Jefferson Hotel in Washington D.C., a “hostage rescue experience,” a brand new Toyota Prius and car insurance, and a stay at the Top Royal Suite in the Burj-al-arab – flight costs included.
The most audacious aspect of this edition is the fact that the entire package doesn’t even add up to its cost of one million dollars, totaling only $629,974.69 instead. I imagine that that wouldn’t have even mattered to a millionaire should he or she had had the money to buy it, though.
