***The following includes major spoilers for parts of Resident Evil Village. If you haven’t beaten the campaign all the way through, come back later.***

Books in Ethan’s Study

Right at the start of the game, players are given free roam to explore Ethan and Mia’s home. There are many optional areas to look around, including a storage room and a study.

You’ll find an interesting book in each of these locations that refer back to two significant characters.

Interacting with the bookshelf in the study reveals a description for Gun Survivalist: A Heavy Firearms Manuel for Field Combat Situations by Joseph Kendo. You’ll remember the Kendo family from the Resident Evil 2 Remake, as we get a scene with them at the Kendo gunshop.

The second book can be found on the bookshelf in the storage room and is called A Historical look into the Architecture of Eastern European Castles and Keeps by George Trevor. Avid Resident Evil fans will recognize George Trevor as the designer of the Spencer Mansion from Resident Evil 1.

Resident Evil 4’s Merchant

The Duke is one of the most important characters in Resident Evil Village, as Ethan will need to visit his shop in order to upgrade weapons, get consumables, and improve his overall stats by creating meals. Thankfully, you not only meet this merchant early on in the game, but you also run into him all over the place, as he somehow teleports throughout the map.

And just about every time you find The Duke in a different area or speak with him after a big story development, he always has something new to share. This ranges from some helpful new upgrades to plenty of witty comments on Ethan’s situation.

The best line of dialogue you’ll hear from the big merchant, though, is a reference that Resident Evil fans are sure to love. After a few visits, the Merchant will bellow “What’re ya buyin’?”

The Duke then chuckles, stating it was something an old friend of his used to say. This is a cool call-back to what the Merchant in Resident Evil 4 would always say when you visit his shop in the game.

Boulder Punching

At this point in the series, Chris Redfield is one of the most recognizable characters in the series, having been a playable character in multiple games, including Resident Evil Village. Throughout his time hunting the creations of Umbrella, the big guy has had quite a lot of exciting adventures.

One of those includes the famous QTE in Resident Evil 5, where he fights Wesker in an active volcano. In order to save his partner’s life, Redfield has to punch a giant boulder.

This scene is so iconic that it has become a pretty big meme in video game culture, as it is constantly shared on social media. Capcom acknowledges this moment in Resident Evil Village during Ethan’s fight with Heisenberg, as the enemy calls Chris a “boulder-punching asshole.”

Umbrella’s Origins

When players take control of Chris Redfield during the late stages of the game, they’ll eventually come upon Miranda’s lab. Here, you can explore and find a lot of documentation detailing the antagonist’s backstory, including what lead her to this point.

One of those texts includes a massive addition to the lore of the Resident Evil universe. It is revealed that Mother Miranda was actually a student of Ozwell E. Spencer, the founder of Umbrella.

In the journal entry, Spencer goes into detail about the research he found in Africa that led to the T-Virus and the creation of Umbrella. He also talks about how he stole the company’s logo from the village’s founder’s crest when he visited.

This entry serves as an awesome tie mutamycete, aka the mold, into the Resident Evil universe, as it shows the different results Mother Miranda’s research yielded compared to Spencer’s T-Virus.
