7. Casual Hanzo
Best Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2017 Skins
In Hanzo’s casual skin he looks like he’s gearing up to go on a snow hike with his best buds. He’s even got a bottle strapped to his side for when it gets late and he wants a cheeky sip of sake; you can’t get more casual than that.
Hanzo’s casual skin comes in last place as its design has received a bit of backlash from the community. The outfit is based off of Hanzo’s attire from the 2016 “Reflections” digital comic, and had fans displeased about how much it differed from the comic’s interpretation. Confusion was particularly caused by Hanzo’s gray beard, which is supposed to be a black goatee. It didn’t take long for Blizzard to respond to this feedback, as they have recently announced that the skin will be updated in January to reflect the original version. Along with the beard’s color change, his trousers are also going to be pulled up ever so slightly. Casual Hanzo can’t be too casual now.
6. Alpine: 76 Solider: 76
Best Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2017 Skins
Soldier Jack Morrison knows that nature can be just as deadly a killer as any opponent on the battlefield, so he’s made sure to wrap up nice and warm for when he plays in the snow. Soldier: 76’s winter gear looks even more high-tech than his usual duds. The Alpine: 76 skin looks almost cybernetic, sporting some blue tubes on his boots as well as a weird chest plate thing. Being covered from head to toe, he’s certainly prepared for any snowball that Mei may throw his way.
It’s a cool skin, but as far as Soldier: 76’s legendary skins go, it’s below average. You could chuck this Alpine costume onto anyone and it wouldn’t have much of an impact. It’s no where near as creative as his Daredevil: 76 or Grillmaster: 76 skins, for example.
5. Ice Fisherman Roadhog
Best Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2017 Skins
Two of fish’s worst fears are man and walrus. Now they have to deal with Roadhog the walrus man. His chain hook is scary enough, but imagine seeing that giant fish hook flying towards your face. Part of Roadhog’s character is that he is a ruthless killer, and that fish hook looks like it could do some major damage. The skeleton on his shoulder shows that he’s had some success with it. He’s even got a second hook hanging out of his belt just for good measure. I thought Roadhog the pig man was scary, but this is terrifying. Wintertime is supposed to be jolly. Why must you give us nightmares so close to Christmas, Blizzard?
4. Avalanche Bastion
Best Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2017 Skins
Bastion always looks kind of funny with a skin that changes the shape of his body. The cube shape to his head gives a Portal companion cube vibe, and that fits well with Bastion’s caring and humble personality. And he’s even got a little wooly hat on his head just in case his metal body gets a little chilly. Awww, isn’t that cute.
What takes this skin from good to amazing is a detail that I didn’t even notice at first, but if you look carefully you can see that Bastion’s bird companion, Ganymede, has turned into a snow owl. Or is it a different bird entirely? Either way, it’s cute as all get-out!
3. Snow Owl Ana
Best Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2017 Skins
What’s better than having a little snow owl buddy? How about being a human-sized snow owl! There’s not a whole lot to say about Ana’s new winter skin, except that it’s a hoot. Snow owls are usually seen as cute, but the blue eyes on this skin make her look pretty menacing.
Not only is she a snow owl, but she’s a stylish snow owl, wearing a nice duffel coat with feathers attached to the bottom. She’s even got a cool little owl plate on her backpack. They could have just given us the coat and this would have been an awesome skin on its own.
2. Beachrat Junkrat
Best Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2017 Skins
At first, I didn’t understand how Beachrat related to Winter at all. Seeing Junkrat in his beach gear atop piles of snow just didn’t make any sense. It took a bit of thinking, but after I brushed aside my ignorance it made perfect sense. Junkrat is Australian. In Australia, the three hottest months are December, January and February; this period is Australian Summer. With that in mind, a water cannon and a blow-up donut with a duck on it makes too much sense. Very clever, Blizzard. The blow-up donut isn’t just for show, but also takes the place of Junkrat’s rip-tire ultimate. Having your opponents cower in fear from a circular ducky is pretty hilarious. This skin is so high up on this list because it is both fun and educational.
1. Rime Sombra
Best Overwatch Winter Wonderland 2017 Skins
Sombra’s Rime is definitely the coolest (and coldest) skin from the Winter Wonderland 2017 selection. It completely changes her character.. While the regular design of Sombra reflects her chaotic good alignment, the ghost white hair and the sharp edges of Rime Sombra gives off a more evil impression. It reminds me of something like the White Witch from Narnia. Comparisons have also been made to Killer Frost as well as Halle Berry’s portrayal of Storm.
Blizzard took this year’s Sombra skin in a totally different direction to last year’s peppermint skin, and it ends up being one of her most badass skins. This year’s Winter Wonderland skins definitely took a lot of inspiration from the word “Winter,” compared to last year’s which predominantly focused on the Christmas aspect of Winter. This has resulted in a diverse, and overall strong selection of skins.
