The Souls-like genre has come out strong this year with games like Code Vein, Blasphemous, and Remnant: From the Ashes. We’ve found a few more Souls-like games coming out soon that you should definitely keep an eye on if you love this particular genre.
Hellpoint
According to the developers, Hellpoint is a “dark, augurist action RPG.” It’s set aboard a derelict space station in a world in the aftermath of an occult quantum catastrophe.
That essentially sounds like sci-fi Bloodborne in space. There aren’t that many dark sci-fi games running around so Hellpoint would be a welcome addition to the science fiction genre.
On the space station with you are creepily designed mobs that are out for blood and you have to use any weapon at your disposal to take them down.
Hellpoint currently doesn’t have a release date but it’s expected to come out at some point in early 2020 for PC and consoles.
EITR
Both Metroidvania and Souls-like, EITR takes place within a mythological Norse world as you control a young woman known as The Shield Maiden.
The Shield Maiden’s fate was meant to be determined by the three Norns but Loki intervened and altered her fate in a way that changed her path. She now has to travel through all of the Norse worlds to discover the new path laid out in front of her.
Instead of either 2D or 3D, perspective is isometric, meaning what you’re seeing is at an angle with gameplay and dungeon crawling reflecting this unique perspective.
EITR has been in development for a while with no set release date but each dungeon within the game is being personally handcrafted by the developers so that, in itself, is going to take some time. For now, you can check out its Steam page.
Plague Hunter
Another game akin to Bloodborne, Plague Hunter takes place in a world where a terrible curse causes people to go insane and turn into monstrous beasts.
With the devs calling it “old school gameplay”, at your disposal are guns and swords you can use to defend yourself against crazed enemies and fiends.
The game also utilizes a traditional 2D side-scrolling perspective akin to many Metroidvania games with an emphasis on character silhouettes set against bright backgrounds.
Plague Hunter is set to release on May 8, 2020 on Steam.
Dolmen
Developed by Massive Work Studio, Dolmen is an upcoming third-person action RPG with a Lovecraftian plot that blends sci-fi and cosmic horror for a unique player experience.
The game takes place on Revion Prime where, according to the devs, “the greatest massacre in the universe has occurred.” You also take control of a mysterious person who somehow managed to wake up here.
Swords, guns, and shields are at your disposal as you fight against numerous aliens, bosses, and enemies as you travel further and deeper into the planet.
Dolmen is expected to come out in 2020 on Steam, PS4, and Xbox One.
Sand is the Soul
Sand is the Soul is a 2D adventure game boasting a unique morality and sanity system that is determined entirely by player choices.
Set in a Victorian post-punk autonomy known as Crosshill, the player is a diplomatic messenger that can choose to continue their mission or make their own decisions determining the outcome of the game and its 30 endings.
The game’s appearance is characterized by vivid colors, bright lights, and dark shadows with a dynamic background.
Sand is the Soul is currently in early access with the full playable game expected to be out later this year.
Nioh 2
The first Nioh was a fantastic game full of smooth, fluid combat and so, so much content. Its sequel already looks like it’s going to expand upon all of the good things that came out of it.
This time you take control of a mysterious half-human half-Yokai warrior who delves deep into Sengoku-era Japan and the Dark Realm.
The game’s setting already looks breathtaking in the various sneak peeks we’ve been given so the full game will practically hurt your eyes in the best way possible.
From an in-depth character creator to stunning graphics, enemies, and NPCs, this is absolutely a sequel worth looking out for.
Nioh 2 is expected to release in 2020 for PlayStation 4.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
The original Hollow Knight was a game that hurt so good in that particular Dark Souls way so its sequel is probably going to lovingly smack you into the ground.
Silksong continues Hollow Knight’s traditional 2D side-scrolling fashion that we came to love with its unique level and character designs.
This time players take control of Hallow, the princess-protector of Hallownest, who somehow finds herself in an unknown location full of enemies and overgrown plants.
Hollow Knight: Silksong has no set release date yet but it will be available on PC, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch.
Dungeonhaven
Dungeonhaven is a 3D action-adventure RPG that everyone should definitely keep an eye on.
You take control of a knight restored from stone to flesh who is guided by a sentient dungeon that wants the power of creation. Now, that already sounds wild.
According to the developers, Dungeonhaven utilizes a deterministic combat system with a variety of weapons, combos, and moves. Your character can also turn to stone at will and block certain enemy attacks.
Dungeonhaven currently has no release date and, since it’s being developed by only two people, it’ll probably be a while until it’s out. However, what we’ve seen of the game so far is very promising.
Elden Ring
Arguably the biggest upcoming Souls-like game, Elden Ring is made by the brilliant minds of Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R.R. Martin himself.
In true Miyazaki fashion, not much has been explained to us or revealed to us other than the game’s Norse-inspired world.
The game’s E3 announcement trailer also shows us that there will be a wild story full of unique characters and settings which with Miyazaki will surely be a crazy ride.
Dark Souls 1, Dark Souls 3, Sekiro and my personal favorite Bloodborne have been pretty fantastic games so Miyazaki probably has a lot of plans for the journey they’ll take us on in Elden Ring.
Elden Ring has no set release date yet but we’ll absolutely keep an eye on when it will.
