Video Games are no strangers to the idea of romance and heart-felt moments, but they’re also no stranger to video game characters never taking the leap towards confessing their feelings to one another. Case in point: Here are five pairs of video game characters who need to get together already. *Warning: Some Spoilers Ahead*
Cloud and Tifa (Final Fantasy VII)
While many a Final Fantasy VII fan might already ship the pair of Cloud and Tifa as a couple, the two RPG legends have never actually gotten together.
Sure, there’s been romantic moments between them. They had a night shared talking on a water tower as kids and a promise to reunite in the future.
Then, as adults, they were there for each other through revolutionary attacks on corporations and paralysis caused by Mako exposure.
And yet, every time they have the chance to get together, something comes up, whether it’s another love interest getting in the way or a planetary catastrophe forcing them to focus on more important matters.
But then, who among RPG characters hasn’t had these exact dilemmas come up, and moved past them with tact and grace to end up together?
It’s time for these crazy kids to embrace their feelings for each other. Lord knows they share common interests, and with a pin stuck in any potential romantic competition – sorry, not sorry – there’s really no reason this year can’t finally be the year their love blossoms in earnest.
Misako and Kiyoko (River City Girls)
Few duos kick as much butt as River City Girls’ protaginist pairing of Misako and Kiyoko, but fewer still have as much potential as a power couple.
Though they spent most of their gaming tenure as background characters in the River City series, the latest title in the franchise saw them unleash their full potential.
Enemies big and small were laid to waste by their combined fury, and they showed themselves more than capable of dishing out as much – if not more – pain than their kidnapped boyfriends.
By journey’s end, they even rescue said boyfriends, only for it to be revealed these “boyfriends” are their unrequited loves.
It’s a devastating discovery, but also one which opens the pair up to see who they’re really meant to be with: Each other.
A companion you can tear a city apart with doesn’t come around every day, and the fact that they’re constantly on the same wavelength only helps matters. Should they finally stop and think about whether they have feelings for one another, it could be the beginning of an iron-clad and indomitable relationship.
Mario and Peach (Super Mario Bros.)
Gamers would be hard-pressed to name any potential relationship between video game characters that has been as drawn out as Mario and Peach’s.
For decades now, Mario has been rescuing Peach from the clutches of Bowser and other evil-doers, always willing to risk life and limb to save what one would assume is the love of his life. Whether there are giant turtle dragons, bomb-spewing airships, or cosmic entities of other-worldly power, he’s there to help her, and always without asking for much in return.
Likewise, Peach has been there to rescue Mario on certain occasions, and even when Mario mucks things up between the two of them, she forgives him and lets him right back into her life.
However, at no point has the pair ever been shown to truly be together. Either by the rules of the Mushroom monarchy or by lackadaisical misunderstanding, each has kept to their own plots in life, only coming together for the occasional adventure.
Taking their time to see if things work between each other is one thing, but after so many years, it’s time for them to either crap or get off the pot. Lord knows each has other suiters out for their attention, and though they may not have aged in several generations worth of games, they’re still not getting any younger.
Kazuma Kiryu and Goro Majima (Yakuza)
While their temperaments may lie on different ends of the spectrum, there’s no denying that Yakuza’s Kazuma Kiryu and Majima Goro were made for each other.
From the get-go, the pair has been driven by similar motivations and ambitions. Both are honor-bound to look out for their crime families with everything they have, and when they happen upon someone in need, they’re ready to dive in without a second thought.
Plus, as time has gone on, their admiration and respect for one another has only grown. Majima was willing to be killed to keep Kiryu’s adopted daughter out of harm’s way, and Kiryu has risked his life to keep Majima alive and happy on more than one occasion.
And yet, with how busy a life of crime has kept them, they’ve never had enough time to sit down and hammer out how they feel about each other. Or at least, they haven’t until now.
With Kiryu cutting ties with his life of crime and Majima nearing his golden years, both are finally free to pursue a life they couldn’t live before. They could live out the twilight of their lives side by side, smashing skulls and looking out for the innocent while walking along a man’s path together.
Doom Guy and Isabelle (Doom and Animal Crossing)
Some may say that a relationship between Isabelle and Doom Guy is a pairing that will only ever exist in internet meme-dom, but after taking a closer look at the pair, it isn’t all that far fetched.
To be fair, they are very different people. One is a quip-y secretary to a small town’s mayor, eager to help but often passed over when the time comes for accolades. The other is a demigod of death and destruction, intent on wreaking bloody carnage by fist or firearm on demons which threaten the existence of mankind.
And yet, they could easily balance out each other’s extremes with these differences. He can help her express her frustrations in violently effective ways, while she could help show him how helping instead of hurting others can be far more fulfilling than eviscerating the souls of the damned.
And yes, they may exist in different series, but all they need to get over that hurdle is some sort of event that crosses their series’ over into one another, or even smashes said series together if you will.
