It’s Not as Linear as Luigi’s Mansion 2
If you had a sour taste in your mouth after playing Luigi’s Mansion 2 on the 3DS due to the way that the title was mission-based and less open-ended than the original Luigi’s Mansion, then I have some great news for you.
Luigi’s Mansion 3 is way less linear than Dark Moon and instead of having missions or chapters, the entire game is open for you to go back and forth, similar to a Metroidvania, but it’s still not as open as the first game.
Each floor of the 15-story-high hotel has a different theme and boss fights for Luigi to get through. One floor is based on a dinosaur museum, another takes place in a production studio, and then you have one that’s based on the pyramids in ancient Egypt –there’s tons of variety.
But, you essentially go through each floor and then move on to the next one without the need to backtrack, unless you’re hunting for the hidden gems and Boos.
It’s definitely not as open-ended as the first game but Luigi’s Mansion 3 still does a great job at letting you explore at your own pace.
It’s Really Easy
OK, so maybe the Luigi’s Mansion series has never been known for having difficult combat or super thought-provoking puzzles to solve, but Luigi’s Mansion 3 seems to be just a tad bit easier than its predecessors, especially when it comes to sucking up ghosts with the updated Poltergust.
Luigi is outfitted with a new slam move that allows him to literally slam ghosts around on the ground that can also damage other enemies. You can use this move pretty much whenever you want and instead of having a tug-of-war with ghosts, they are not challenging in any sense of the word.
It doesn’t lessen the experience too much for me, but it would have been nice to have some tricky combat encounters. That being said, some of the bosses do present a little bit of challenge and they offer some really fun fights to break up the simple ghosts fights.
There’s a Ton of Collectibles
Something that you should know before going into Luigi’s Mansion 3 is that there are tons and tons of hidden gems to collect throughout every floor of the hotel.
There’s 15 floors in the hotel and each floor has about 5-6 gems which add up to… a lot of gems! They are all hidden pretty well and some of them will require you to think outside of the box for sure.
There’s also hidden Boos and other ghosts for you to find so even after you roll the credits, there should still be tons of things for you to find to give yourself some extra playtime hours.
There’s Money Everywhere
After spending a couple of hours with Luigi’s Mansion 3, you would probably think that our boy Luigi here is in some type of financial trouble because he loves picking up tons and tons of money with that vacuum cleaner of his.
I’m not sure if Luigi is in debt or if the Mushroom Kingdom Mafia is after him and his bro, but good lord, there is so much money to collect in Luigi’s Mansion 3 and you can literally find it in every single room in some form, whether it be gold bricks, dollar bills, gems, pearls, or gold coins.
Make sure to interact with every little thing that you can so that you can rack up your savings account though because later on in the story, you’ll need that cash for E. Gadd as he has his own shopping network for you to check out in his lab.
It’s basically just used to track down all of the secret gems and Boo’s in the game by purchasing trackers but if you’re not good at puzzles, the trackers will definitely come in handy at the end of the day.
The Entire Game Can Be Played in Co-Op
Well, not literally the ENTIRE game but the majority of Luigi’s Mansion 3 can be played with a second player in tow that can take control of Luigi’s gooey counterpart, Gooigi.
He can do everything that Luigi can do but he will melt into nothingness if he touches water or fire… so be careful with that.
You can both explore the same areas and interact with the environment to help each other solve puzzles and defeat ghosts –which is a lot easier with the both of you using the Poltergust.
If you have a best friend, family member, or significant other that’s interested in helping you rescue Mario from King Boo, this is a neat feature that can make the adventure a lot more fun.
