Final Fantasy XV
After years in development, Final Fantasy XV finally saw the light of day in late 2016. To mark the occasion, a special edition PS4 Slim was released. The console sports a very sleek and simple design. A large moon with the golden numbers XV is emblazoned on the top of the console.
The controller also sports a small XV. While the design may not be representative of the game itself, the simplicity certainly adds to the elegance of the slimmed down PlayStation.
Batman Arkham Knight
Another simple design comes in the form of the special edition PS4 released in tandem with Batman Arkham Knight. The silver system looks like a plate of armor, with one-half of the console hosting a silhouette of the dark knight himself.
The controller also got a nice silver finish, adding to the clean aesthetic. Like all good special edition consoles, this piece of hardware is fantastic because it doesn’t clutter the console with complex graphics, opting instead for simplicity.
Metal Gear Solid V
One of the newest additions to Big Boss’ arsenal in MGS V was a sleek red metal arm. The special edition of the PS4 mimicked the design of the arm, coating the console in a bright red paint with a single gold line running down the middle.
The controller benefits from the same simplicity, opting for a more muted silver. Each sport the Diamond Dogs insignia, making sure you know what game your system is providing.
Star Wars Battlefront
What one image says Star Wars more than anything else? Did the image of Darth Vader’s helmeted head immediately come to mind? This particular PS4 was packaged with the most recent Star Wars Battlefront. The Sith lord’s menacing face takes up the entirety of the console’s face. The clear white lines really make the image look stunning against the black.
The controller also benefits from some nice color-coding. The grey buttons really stand out and the red D-pad clearly denotes which side of the force you belong to. And the hundreds of small “Star Wars” logos don’t hurt either, but they can look a bit gaudy.
Dragon Quest Heroes
This special edition PS4 stands apart from the rest because it isn’t just a simple graphic and color change. While it does do that as well, it also adds a small metal slime monster at the front of the console.
The grinning pile of goo adds a little bit of character to the system and makes it stand out from other versions of the system that are a little more flat.
20th Anniversary PlayStation
20 years of the PlayStation brand deserved a special version of the company’s latest system. The system’s colors mimic those of the original PlayStation, including the multicolored logo.
It isn’t much more than a grey PS4, but the sense of nostalgia is still great, if you can manage to track one of them down. An incredibly limited number were made so you might have to put down quite a bit of money to snag one.
