Overwatch: Halloween Terror
Blizzard has a good thing going for it in Overwatch’s Halloween Terror. Until Nov. 4, you can participate (once again) in Junkenstein’s Revenge, one of Overwatch’s few PvE modes. And as always, this mode pits teams of players against hordes of zombie robots.
However, the meat of Halloween Terror is the special Halloween skins. You can earn plenty of returning favorites, such as Cultist Zenyatta and Dragon Symmetra, as well as some brand new skins like Demon Orisa and Warlock Ashe (and B.O.B.).
Best of all, this year’s Halloween Terror features weekly challenges that reward participants with new icons, sprays, and skins, including Demon Hunter Sombra. If you ever wanted to earn a skin that was previously exclusive to BlizzCon ticket holders, you better start winning those multiplayer matches.
Borderlands 3: Bloody Harvest
Borderlands 3 is the youngest game on this list, but it still is home to some fantastic Halloween action. You can fight spooky enemies (as well as a boss who is basically an evil Ghost Rider from space) to earn some sweet loot.
Bloody Harvest is full of Halloween rewards, including spooky vault hunter skins, weapon trinkets, and weapon skins. The event also features a legendary weapon: the Fearmonger. This weapon might look like the unholy union of a shotgun and worm snot, but it is well worth the effort.
To participate in the Bloody Harvest, you have to talk to Maurice, a Saurian who somehow boarded your ship —and even more surprising doesn’t want to eat you. Take your time, though, because the event will last until Dec. 5.
Apex Legends: Fight or Fright
Apex Legends might be a battle royale, but its developers know how to turn the genre on its head for Halloween.
Apex Legend’s Fight or Fright event is home to the custom Shadowfall mode. In Shadowfall, games start off as normal, but the twist unveils itself once players start dying. Upon defeat, vanquished players respawn and join the evil Shadow Squad.
After players are whittled down to 10 survivors, they need to band together and evacuate, lest they be consumed by the Shadow Squad’s hordes.
Of course, Fight or Fright also features quite a few character cosmetics and weapon skins that can be bought, crafted, and earned through event challenges. The event lasts until Nov. 5, so you need to put on a brave face if you want some Halloween treats.
Final Fantasy XIV: All Saint’s Wake
The Continental Circus returns once again to Final Fantasy XIV for another round of All Saint’s Wake. But, the ringmaster isn’t rehashing last year’s festivities. While you still need to be level 15 and complete the quest “It’s Probably Pirates” before you can join the fun, All Saint’s Wake has new attractions and rewards for returning customers.
This time, the circus is giving away special items such as a Pumpkin Carriage and your very own Ahriman mount, complete with a witch’s hat. While you can purchase items from past All Saint’s Wakes at the circus vendor, you better act fast. After Nov. 1, the Continental Circus is pulling up its stakes and leaving until next year.
Rocket League: Haunted Hallows
It’s not every day a game’s Halloween event is also a Netflix show tie-in, but Rocket League is not like other games.
This year, Rocket League is heading to Stranger Things’ Upside Down via the Haunted Hallows event. Until Nov. 11, you can compete in the Farmstead, a corrupted, um, farmstead where the Mind Flayer watches from the background. Here’s hoping he’s rooting for your team.
Moreover, throughout the event, you can earn Candy Corn that can be redeemed for Halloween, autumn, and Stranger Things-inspired cosmetics. Do you want your car to wear a Camp Know Where cap, or perhaps you want a player banner made out of a Demogorgon? All these and more can be earned in the Haunted Hallows.
Pokemon GO: Halloween Event
Pokemon GO tends to feature scarily good Halloween events, and this year, the game provides a healthy mix of new faces and returning bonuses.
Throughout the Halloween event, Ghost and Dark-types will swarm the world of Pokemon GO, and since the game is in the middle of a Unovan invasion, you can catch plenty of the Gen V Ghost-type Yamask. Moreover, trainers can also encounter costumed Pikachu, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, and Charmander, as well as the legendary Darkrai.
During the event, you can earn candy twice as fast, complete special Halloween-themed Field Research tasks, and participate in a Special Research quests to get a second stab at catching Spiritomb. Plus, this Halloween Event comes packed with new character customization options, such as a Pikachu Onesie and a Zubat backpack.
The Pokemon GO Halloween Event will only last until Nov. 1, so get tricking and treating.
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled: Spooky Grand Prix
Crash Team Racing always introduces new features every so often via Grand Prix seasons, and since the latest season coincides with Halloween, the developers decided to go with the flow and turn the season into an in-game Halloween event.
Much like previous Grand Prix seasons, the meat of the Spooky Grand Prix is the new characters. While the game has yet to produce a ghostly Crash, the new Grand Prix lets you unlock the classic characters Nina Cortex, Dr. N. Brio, and Komodo Moe. Moreover, the season features a new spooky race track, some new ghoulish cosmetics, and a few new carts —one of which N. Brio invented.
Plus, throughout the Spooky Grand Prix, you can complete new challenges, including a terrifying ghost chase. Crash Team Racing’s Halloween challenges and rewards only last until Nov. 4, so if you snooze, you lose.
Killing Floor 2: Grim Treatments
Killing Floor 2 is already Halloweenish because of its zombies, but the developers up the creep factor for every Halloween. This year, the changes are a little insane, pun intended.
Killing Floor 2’s Grim Treatments event takes place in two of the world’s scariest locales: an abandoned asylum and a bombed-out city. Plus, the game’s enemies get into the spirit of the season and dress up as mummies. vampires, and every other kind of classic movie monster.
As you survive the monster-infested asylum and city, you will earn good old Halloween-themed cosmetics, including the witch hunter outfit. Better yet, you can purchase and earn a bevy of new weapons, including a nailgun, a hi-tech beam weapon that heals allies, and a friggin’ lightsaber. Nothing says Halloween quite like decapitating a Frankenstein’s monster with a Jedi’s weapon of choice.
For Honor: Fangs of the Otherworld
Not all in-game Halloween events want you to feel like you’re playing as (or against) actual vampires or werewolves. Some, like For Honor’s Fangs of the Otherworld, embrace the inherent goofiness of Halloween costumes.
Throughout Fangs of the Otherworld, you can participate in the new Spooky Slashers mode. Okay, it’s not so much new as it is the Dominion mode with a twist, but in Spooky Slashers, you can capture zones to obtain boosts that make victory easier. However, death means being booted back to square one.
Moreover, you can unlock plenty of ghoulish treats for For Honor’s characters, including spooky weapons, monster-inspired executions, and silly rubber masks. But, these cosmetics are only available until Nov. 4, so if you ever wanted to execute opponents by turning them into Chinese hopping vampires (yes, seriously), you better act fast.
Hitman 2: October Update
The Hitman franchise is no stranger to ghouls and spooks. Agent 47 has encountered ghosts and dressed up as scarecrows, but since Halloween is right around the corner, he’s ready to kill people by scaring them to death.
This year, IO Interactive has quite a few tricks and treats in store for gamers. The October update is full of unlockable weapons and Halloween costumes, as well as special contracts and challenges.
Anyone who wants to to dive right into the chilling atmosphere can complete Halloween-themed community contracts, a new terrifying Escalation contract that screams slasher movie, and the Uninvited challenge pack.
FIFA 20: Ultimate Scream Team
If you like soccer (football if you’re European) and love video games, you probably play FIFA 20. While the game probably isn’t what comes to mind when you think of Samhain, it still provides a good, spoopy event.
The meat of FIFA 20’s Halloween fun is the Ultimate Scream Team. While unlockable players don’t dress up as vampires or werewolves, a select few fight like monsters and receive hefty stat boosts. If you unlock one of these supernatural characters during the Halloween event, they’re yours to keep.
Moreover, FIFA 20’s stadiums are transmogrified for the holiday thanks to Halloween decorations. At least, we think they’re decorations; it’s hard to tell the difference between mummy bandages and toilet paper.
Destiny 2: Festival of the Lost
Since Destiny 2 is now free for everyone, this year is the perfect time to dive into the game’s special Halloween event, Festival of the Lost.
Just like last year, Festival of the Lost lets you explore the dark and spooky Haunted Forest. No, it’s not a literal forest, but it is an infinite Vex construct that challenges you with unending waves of enemies and a 15-minute time limit.
The further you journey into the forest, the more rewards you receive, and the more rewards you receive, the more Halloween loot you can buy. You can purchase paper masks of faces from Destiny’s rogue’s gallery (and The Drifter), plenty of spooky decorations, and even a powerful assault rifle with a hauntingly beautiful neon decor.
While Festival of the Lost starts later than other Halloween events, it ends later, too. You’ve got until Nov. 19 to enjoy the scares, so eyes up, Guardian; you’re in for a fright.
