10 Games That May or May Not Release in 2019, but It’d Be a Lot Cooler If They Did

Cyberpunk 2077

This noir-styled RPG set in a dystopian future has been at the top of many players’ must-have list since it’s big unveiling at E3 2018 (although it first announced back in 2012).

As for recent news on Cyberpunk 2077, in early March the director of a little game called The Witcher 3 was added to the development team as the new Design Director. And soon after, we got a behind-the-scenes look at the game’s creative process in a video featuring the CEO, Level Designer, and Community Lead for CD Projekt.

This video feature ends with the statement that Cyberpunk is “coming when it’s ready”; and while that sounds a bit disheartening, most recently we found out that CD Projekt RED expects E3 2019 to be its “most important ever”.

When Cyberpunk 2077  does launch, it’ll be available for PS4, PC, and Xbox One.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection (PC)

Games We Hope Come Out in 2019

Hopefully, PC players won’t have to wait much longer than they already have for Microsoft to bring Halo to their other exclusive product– Windows.

It was announced on March 12 that The Master Chief Collection would be coming to PC, but even a general release expectation has not been made available yet.

The only launch date barometer we can use right now is Halo Community Director Brian Jarrad’s Tweet from April 1st announcing that “if all goes to plan, this is the month we start the first Reach/MCC flights.” Don’t worry, he confirmed it wasn’t an April Fools joke.

The “flights” here basically mean beta tests of the PC ports that make up The Master Chief Collection. Developers will be testing each game individually before launch, and according to this Tweet, will be testing Halo: Reach first.

How long this will take is unclear, but the fact that there isn’t a nailed down release window at the moment may imply a lengthy process.

 Animal Crossing 2019

Games We Hope Come Out in 2019

Although it was slated for 2019 when it was first unveiled, we haven’t gotten any news on a new Animal Crossing’s development since.

In the announcement trailer back in September of last year, viewers chatted with the beloved Tom Nook. The helpful Tanuki references the character Isabelle (soon after added to the Smash Bros. rosters) and mentions that he has a lot of work to do.

While there have been a few spin-off titles (the most recent in 2017 for iOS/Android), the last entry in the Animal Crossing main series was “New Leaf” back in 2012. Hopefully, we’ll get a (positive) update about a new Animal Crossing at the next Nintendo Direct. And hopefully, the next Nintendo Direct will be soon.

The Last of Us: Part II

Games We Hope Come Out in 2019

Progress updates on the next chapter of this post-apocalyptic Sony exclusive have been slim since the game’s big reveal at E3 2018.

Among the scraps of information tossed to us over the past 10 months, Creative Director Neil Druckmann teased of a “complicated and heart-wrenching scene”, and PS4 owners got a free dynamic theme to add “a warm and inviting post-pandemic atmosphere” to their holiday season.

Most recently, The Last of Us Part II was featured in a trailer highlighting PS4 exclusives. But don’t get too excited, the video doesn’t include any new footage for the game.

Nevertheless, it’s good to know that it hasn’t been totally forgotten about it.

Gears 5

Games We Hope Come Out in 2019

Gears 5 was officially announced at E3 2018 with a trailer that reveals new developments in the story and boasts of some of the amazing new features the game will include.

The development of Gears 5 will be handled by The Coalition, who also produced the fourth entry in the series. However, this time, the team plans to be more innovative than ever (and in more ways than just removing “of War” from the title).

During a panel discussion at Microsoft’s XO18 conference in November, studio head Rod Fergusson explained how his team “didn’t want to go crazy” with Gears of War 4, but Gears 5 will bring out much more of the team’s creativity:

“What we wanted to do for 4 was just re-establish the franchise and establish The Coalition as a legitimate studio. And we’ve been embraced by fans, and they loved Gears 4, and we feel like we’ve accomplished that goal. So now, Gears 5 is about bringing The Coalition’s personality to the game. Now we’re gonna see a bunch of innovation, a bunch of change, a bunch of things things that are really exciting that are really different, but still feel very Gears of War.”

Gears 5 will be an Xbox One/Windows exclusive when it (hopefully) releases later this year.

The Outer Worlds

Obsidian has been responsible for many amazing RPGs over the years, including the recent Fallout New Vegas– which happened to get mentioned in The Outer Worlds announcement trailer.

The newest Obisian offering looks to revitalize many classic RPG features that have typically been staples of the genre, but have become increasingly absent in recent titles (notably, recent Fallout titles).

First revealed at The Game Awards in December of last year, The Outer Worlds seeks to put the actual “role-playing” back in RPG. Most recently, we were treated to over 20 minutes of new gameplay footage at PAX East, and in this footage, we see that the element of player choice/consequence is indeed alive and well. The world feels alive, dialogue choices are diverse, and NPCs can be killed!

As of now, The Outer Worlds is promised to release sometime this year for PS4, Xbox, and PC (Epic Store exclusive).

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order

Games We Hope Come Out in 2019

The CEO of Respawn Entertainment casually dropped the news of another EA produced AAA Star Wars title during a press conference at E3 2018.

The game’s official website describes Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order as “a brand-new action adventure game which tells an original Star Wars™ story around a surviving Padawan set shortly after the events of Star Wars™: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith™. ” The website also states that it’s due to release “Holiday 2019”.

Cut to early 2019, and Respawn Entertainment has produced the stellar Apex Legends but not said much about the newest entry in one of the most popular entertainment franchises in history. However, we are aware that Stig Asmussen, director of God of War, will be leading the development.

The latest we know, gathered from EA’s February financial report, is that Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is “very far along in development”, that it “plays spectacularly well”, and that it captures “the fantasy of becoming a Jedi”. In other words, hype train material.

As of now, it has not been specified which platforms will support Jedi Fallen Order.

Doom Eternal

Games We Hope Come Out in 2019

At E3 2018 we found out that we were getting more demon slaying action, and that this time, the battle would be coming to Earth. Since then, we’ve gotten gameplay demos, found out that the game’s composer has enlisted the help of “heavy metal screamers”, and have been intrigued by a number of interesting promises– Doom Eternal will run at 30fps on the Switch, 60 fps on Google’s Stadia, and Bethesda has pledged support for Steam.

The question is, will this come to fruition in 2019? Doom Eternal will be available for Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia at some point soon.

Biomutant

Games We Hope Come Out in 2019

Biomutant is a promising RPG set in a colorful open-world that envisions post-apocalyptia in a more playful, furry-filled way. The game was officially announced back in August of 2017, and accompanied with this first look later in the month.

Although there haven’t been many, the few updates we’ve gotten since — a gameplay teaser and a Gamescom 2018 sizzle reel — have only fueled our anticipation of Biomutant’s final release.

The most recent peek at the game’s progress came in December with a trailer highlighting both characters and a world that are equally as vibrant.

We’re not sure if Biomutant will release this year as promised, but we do know it’ll be available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One when it’s done.

Death Stranding

Games We Hope Come Out in 2019

The news regarding Kojima’s first game since leaving Konami has been just as cryptic as the game itself. First announced at E3 2016, Death Stranding is being developed by Kojima Productions and featuring actors Norman Reedus and Mads Mikkelsen portraying the game’s main characters.

In December 2018, Head of Marketing and Communications Aki Saito shared his impressions of the game as “amazing”, and “nothing he thought it was”. Then in January, Kojima personally showed off his work-in-progress to Guerrilla Games, leaving the managing director “so impressed”.

Next, an interview with J-Wave provided a sizable chunk of info last month. In this conversation, Kojima discusses how the story for Death Stranding is done, but as it’s very much a personal, artistic project for him, he could keep working on it forever if it weren’t for deadlines.

The most recent news comes in a Tweet from Kojima explaining that the game is not yet “in its debugging stage”, but that Kojima himself is playing it daily on PS4 while “connecting” and “adjusting”. A “key time” in the development.

As of now, Death Stranding has only been announced for PS4.
