Top Gun: Maverick Trailer Revealed at San Diego Comic-Con

Before revealing the trailer, Cruise told the audience at Comic-Con that people have hounded him for over three decades following the release of the original Top Gun and asked him whether he’ll ever make a sequel. He briefly explained that the film, to be directed by Tron: Legacy and Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski, is “a love letter to aviation.”

The trailer starts with Maverick flying over the desert to the voiceover of Ed Harris’s character telling the daredevil pilot of his credentials — serving over 30 years in the Air Force and being the only pilot to shoot down three enemy planes in the last 40 years, yet somehow he couldn’t get promoted, won’t retire, and won’t die. He then asks Maverick why he’s standing in his office as Captain.

“It’s one of life’s mysteries, sir,” Maverick responds.

As their conversation suggests, Top Gun: Maverick is set 34 years after the events of the original film. The sequel finds Maverick promoted to Captain and flight instructor at the Top Gun school, guiding the late Goose’s son to become a pilot.

Top Gun: Maverick flies into theaters June 26, 2020. You can watch the debut trailer below.

If the Top Gun sequel was released 15 years ago, Jessica Simpson would’ve contributed her cover of “Take My Breath Away” by Berlin.

If your interest in aviation leans more towards video games, you should check out the new trailer of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown’s first story DLC.
