Today the Comic Market Committee announced on its website that preparations are ongoing with the aim to bring back Tokyo’s popular Comiket as an in-person event this year.
Comiket 99 should be held at the traditional Tokyo Big Sight venue in Odaiba, Tokyo on Dec. 30 and Dec. 31, 2021.
The latest edition of the event was its 97th, held in December 2019 and drawing 750,000 Fans of Games, Anime, Manga, Doujinshi, and Cosplay in a massive celebration of all things Otaku. It was just before the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic
The 98th edition in May 2020 was canceled, and since then there has been no Comiket in Tokyo.
This year, after consulting with the authorities and with the hope that the rollout of the COVID-19 vaccine will make things safer, the organizers have decided to organize the event with the aim to bring it back to the physical world.
Of course, regulations to prevent infection will still be in place and attendance will be limited, and the organizers admit that the decision was taken based on the expectation of a slowdown of the virus. if the pandemic situation doesn’t actually improve, they may postpone the event again.
However, the decision to hold Comiket 99 was taken considering the situation of the world of doujinshi as a whole. The organizers believe that if they don’t start moving, the “place” called Comiket will never open again.
At the moment, we don’t know whether we’ll be able to be on the show floor like we were in 2019 to bring you a report, but we’ll certainly do our best.
