My Hero Academia presents a tantalizing world where the majority of its inhabitants have super powers or ‘quirks’. The story follows a kid called Deku who, tragically, doesn’t possess any super powers of his own. Despite his bad luck, Deku is still hellbent on becoming a superhero, so does everything in his power to do so. He is given superhuman strength by another hero, and then goes on to enrol in U.A. High School, a place where would-be heroes go to learn the ropes.

It’s a perfect amalgamation of everything that makes superhero stories so great, and features some amazingly creative original superheroes which make up its main cast. My Hero Academia has it all; high school drama, big action set pieces and plenty of heart. We’ve all dreamt of being a superhero at some point in our lives, meaning that Deku is both relatable and endearing. There are three seasons to watch over on Crunchyroll.

A Place Further Than the Universe

Anime Shows on Crunchyroll You Must Watch

A Place Further Than the Universe forgoes huge monster battles and over-the-top comedy for a more personal and grounded tale. It tells the story of a girl as she travels to Antarctica to search for her missing Mother. At its core, it’s a study of the subtleties of female friendship, as four very different young women go on the ultimate road trip to a land that ‘strips everything bare’. Each character is fully fleshed out and portrays incredible depth.

As with all great road-trips, this anime is more about the journey than the destination, which takes the girls to far corners of the Earth and brings them closer than they ever thought possible. You can check out all 13 episodes of A Place Further Than the Universe over on Crunchyroll.

JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure is an effortlessly stylish hodge-podge of pop culture and several different genres. As such, it’s pretty difficult to describe. The first season takes place in Victorian England and focuses on the straight arrow, Jonathan Joestar, and his Dickensian feud with his adopted vampire brother–Dio.

In later series, the show moves from secret Nazi experiments, to 1980’s Japan, managing to maintain a consistent level of quality throughout. It’s a perfect snapshot into where manga was as a medium in the ’80s, and is one of the most faithful anime adaptations you’re likely to find. Attack on Titan has solidified itself as one of anime’s greats in its short time on the air so far. Telling the story of Eren Yeager, a young man who enlists in the army to avenge his dead family, Attack on Titan is impressive in its scope and epic in its approach to action. The show’s baddies, the Titans, are genuinely terrifying, and the way it treats death means that it constantly keeps the viewer guessing. There’s an awesome twist about half way through the series which subverts all expectations and takes things in a more interesting direction.

The action scenes are a particular highlight, with the Survey Corps utilizing an acrobatic fighting style to even the odds against the menacing Titans. It’s astoundingly gory, heartbreaking and awesome, and absolutely deserves all of the hype it’s getting. There was a rather lengthy break between seasons one and two so you won’t be too far behind if you jump in now. You can stream them both over on Crunchyroll.
