Four years into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, moviegoers were well-trained to stay for one, two, three (or five for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2) credit scenes–some during and some after. After the climactic Battle of New York in 2012’s The Avengers, those who stuck around were taken to a remote location in space. There, the leader of the Chitauri alien force is explaining to another alien their failure in their attack on earth. Then, this mysterious alien turns around and says that dealing with the Avengers would be “courting death itself.” This alien was Thanos.
For those familiar, what was in store for the MCU couldn’t have been more easily telegraphed–Thanos was coming. If that scene was your first encounter with Thanos, you were likely confused at the excitement of the others around you. Regardless, now six years later, it’s nigh impossible to go about your day-to-day without hearing the word Thanos and certainly so if you’re on social media at all.
If you haven’t seen Infinity War but somehow made it this far in the article, this is your last chance to remain spoiler-free.
After more than two and a half hours of absolute terror that Thanos would finally obtain all Infinity Stones and bring an end to the universe as we know it, Thor stabs Thanos right in the heart with his brand new axe, Stormbreaker. Yes, the Avengers did it. They won.
Or so you thought.
As a sly smile stretches across Thanos’ face, he informs the God of Thunder that he should have aimed for the head and before audiences even have a chance to catch their breath, Thanos snaps his fingers.
If you paid attention to the movie, many characters warn that if Thanos obtains all Infinity Stones, he could wipe out half of the universe with the snap of his fingers and he does just that.
Slowly, the characters we’ve come to know and love realize what is to come as their friends, and the rest of the universe, begin to bite the dust–quite literally. Half of the universe turns to dust and ceases to exist.
While it’s not quite sure who is gone for good and who might make a return, as it stands, there are only a handful of Avengers left and Thanos has won. While it might not seem so, the half of the universe that ceases to exist is completely random, according to Thanos.
