For those of you who are fans of Christina Applegate, you’ll be excited to hear that her 1991 coming-of-age comedy Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is absolutely killing it on streaming.
According to Flix Patrol, the film has climbed onto the top 10 charts on Hulu in the United States and even managed to land in the #2 spot on Nov. 11. In the film, Applegate plays a 17-year-old named Sue, who assumes the role as head of house after her elderly babysitter inexplicably dies. Despite its morbid humor and moderate box-office gross, the film gained a cult following and has been compared to other coming-of-age movies like Home Alone.
The comedy was Applegate’s first starring role after she previously guest-starred in several television projects, including 21 Jump Street (1988) and MADtv (1996), and even hosted Saturday Night Live. According to the writers of the film, Applegate’s character and the film’s premise were inspired by the famous Tom Cruise ’80s movie Risky Business, in which a young high school student is thrust into adulthood.
In addition to Applegate, the film stars Joanna Cassidy, whom film fanatics may remember played the replicant Zhora Salome in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner. Other notable co-stars include Keith Hogan (Toy Soldiers), John Getz (Doom Patrol), and Joshua Charles(The Good Wife, Dead Poets Society).
Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead is currently streaming on Hulu.
