Genji is a valuable dive DPS and can be devastating to play against when in the right hands, despite his less-than-ideal position in the current meta. If you’re sick of going up against god-tier Genji’s and are looking for how to counter-pick and shut him down in-game, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything you need to know about how to counter Genji in Overwatch 2.

All Genji Counters in Overwatch 2

While Genji is a strong dive hero and has the potential to run over and disrupt your backline to get picks, he also has several counters in the game that can be useful for shutting him down. If your team is struggling against a Genji, then try switching to one or more of these counter-picks to help give yourselves an advantage against him in battle:

Winston

  • Winston’s own mobility with his Jump allow him to pursuit Genji’s high mobility and keep up with him
  • His Tesla Cannon is non-deflectable, making it a great option for chipping away at Genji’s health
  • Despite Tesla Cannon not doing much damage, it does also go through enemy shields. This means Genji has a hard time escaping Winston back behind barriers, as Winston can just follow him into the backline to secure the kill.

Symmetra

  • Symmetra’s Turrets can be great at making a nuisance for Genji players, especially if you set them up around areas Genji is likely to dive in from.
  • These turrets will slow Genj’s movement speed, making it much easier to focus fire him as a team.
  • Symmetra is also quite good for beaming him down with her primary fire, especially if it’s charged up, as Genji can’t deflect this.

Cassidy

  • Prior to his nerf in Season 4, Cassidy could oneshot combo Genji with his Magnetic Grenade by hitting one shot of his primary fire + sticking the grenade. While this combo has changed slightly after his nerf, it still works quite well, and makes Cassidy a good counter-pick if the enemy also has fliers or other heroes weak to mid-ranged hitscan.
  • Cassidy can now take down Genji by hitting one shot of primary fire, sticking his Magnetic Grenade to him, and hitting one more shot of primary fire, making the combo Shot + Nade + Shot.
  • This works great if the Genji is playing quite aggressively and diving into your team with his Dash, as it will be much easier to hit this combo when he gets in close range to Cassidy.

Echo

  • While she’s one of the harder, more technical Heroes to get the hang of, if you’re proficient in Echo, she can be an excellent Genji counter.
  • While Genji can deflect her primary fire and Sticky Bombs, Echo has flight movement, which allows her to hover in the sky and shoot these from angles that are much harder for Genji to deflect.
  • Once Genji is low health, Echo can easily finish him off with her Focus Beam, which Genji is unable to deflect. This beam will also go through shield and can be used mid-flight, making Echo capable of chasing him down to secure that kill if she needs to.

Lifeweaver

  • Lifeweaver doesn’t counter Genji by killing him with ease, but his unique set of Hero abilities make it very easy to disrupt Genji and make his job of diving in and secure picks a lot harder.
  • Lifeweaver’s Life Grip can provide an ally with immunity and pull them out of Genji’s close-range to safety when he dives on someone. This is particularly useful at the beginiung of his ultimate, Dragon Blade, as if Genji fails to get a first kill and restore his Dash, Blade can be extremely hard to get value from, and may turn out completely useless.
  • Lifeweaver’s Ultimate, Tree of Life also does enough healing to help keep teammates alive through Dragon Blade, and can allow your team to focus fire and kill the Genji as he tries to get those kills.

Moira

  • Moira is great for providing a nuisance to an enemy Genji. Her mobility with Fade lets her chase him down and get aggressive to secure a kill against him, as well as easily back out of the 1v1 or move away when he dives in to your team.
  • Moira’s Damage Orb can be great for chipping away a chunk of Genji’s health, but it is able to be deflected, so you’ll need to bait out his Deflect first.
  • Moira’s primary fire is her biggest asset when it comes to taking down Genji, as it soft locks onto enemies, which makes it quite easy to track the highly-mobile cyborg Ninja as he dives in and out and jumps around your team. He also can’t deflect this primary fire, so if you notice a Genji nearby on low health, it will be very easy for you to kill him off as Moira.

Brigitte

  • Brigitte is a great anti-dive Support pick, as her toolkit enables her to deal with many dive heroes both singlehandedly and with the assistance of her nearby teammates.
  • Once Genji dives in, Brig can use her Whip Shot to push him back away, making it hard for him to get that close-range damage and rest his Dash.
  • Brig also has a shield, which can be great for blocking his shirukens at close-range. You should be able to shield + Whip Shot and Shield Bash to either kill Genji, or force him back for your allies to pick off.
  • Lastly, thanks to the recent rework of Brigitte’s Ultimate ability, Rally, she can now use Shield Bash to stun Genji when Rally is active. This can work great, especially against Dragon Blade, as Rally will provide you and your allies with Temp Health, and allow you to stun Genji as he dashes in with Blade, stopping his momentum and giving a moment of vulnerability for your team to take advantage of and burst him down with damage.
