Can Last-Gen Consoles Play with PS5 & Xbox Series X|S on FIFA 23?

The bad news is that, no, unfortunately, PS4 and Xbox One players can’t play with players on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

The reason for this is because of the difference in-game engine. While the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game are still running on an older engine, the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions are running on a newer engine which provides more realistic physics effects and player movement.

That means that, while the core gameplay may remain the same between last and current-gen consoles, the way the game feels to play is drastically different between the two.

As such, it’s not possible for those playing on PS4 and Xbox One to play with friends on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, even in an online friendly game. If you want to play with or against your friends, you’ll at least need to be on the same console generation.

The good news, though, is that PS4 and Xbox One players can now play with one another. The case is the same for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players, who can also play with those on PC, as that version of the game is also the newer version.

That’s everything you need to know on whether last-gen consoles can play with current-gen systems on FIFA 23. For more on the game, be sure to check out our guides on FIFA 23’s Chemistry system explained, what the install size is on all consoles, and how to get FUT Stars in FIFA 23.
