What’s New in Fallout 4? Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Boston

What’s a new Fallout game without an entirely new Wasteland to discover? Fallout 4 provides players with Boston, a ravaged world dealing with the nuclear fallout of a potent atomic bomb.

Players will be able to explore a city built into Fenway Park, historical landmarks overrun with raiders, and more of the sprawling Massachusetts wasteland when they start up their adventure. There is much more forestry now than before, and the docks offer an amazing change of pace for the series, as well.

There’s quite a bit more life thrown into the mix and it may make for the most interesting setting yet.

Vaults

Of course, not every lone wanderer comes out of the same Vault, and there’s a slew of new Vault secrets in store for Fallout 4 players.

Each and every single one offers their very own trials and tribulations, and Vault 111 is no different. Just like in previous installments, the Vault you come out of isn’t the only one in the land. Don’t worry, though, you’re still the chosen one.

Settlements

Fallout has always offered safe havens where you can meet some nice people and store your hard-earned belongings. But Fallout 4 takes it a step further with settlements. These are bases that you establish, help build, and eventually grow into functioning Wasteland bases.

You don’t just build them in the sense of choosing  certain perks and where new unlocked buildings will go. You can expand on already existing structures or even build one from scratch, throwing in wiring, security, and decorations for extra fun.

On top of that, you’ll be responsible for the people you save, since you’ll provide shelter, sustenance, and work for the downtrodden masses of Commonwealth.

Weapon Customization

Ah, weapons. Those delightful devices of mayhem that help to keep the player alive. Bethesda has never been cheap in providing an abundance of options, yet they still managed to take things to the next level. Fallout 4 includes full-on weapon customization unlike any Fallout game before.

You’ll be able to swap out almost every single part of each gun you find. You can even customize Legendary Weapons and melee weapons to fine tune each murderous encounter to your liking. Want to put a high-powered scope on a revolver? Do it. After all, who needs a cumbersome sniper rifle?

The combinations are almost endless as you turn laser rifles into scatterguns, and pipe pistols into silent assassination tools. Whatever you feel you need, you can make it.

Armor

Just like weapons, armor in Fallout 4 is customizable. You’ll be able to upgrade the material and even a few traits of the armor you’ll be donning out in the Wasteland. Want to add pockets to your leggings to increase your carry limit? Knock yourself out and put pockets on absolutely everything.

You can even paint certain items with patterns you unlock in order to give them special perks, which adds an additional level of depth to your attire. On top of the customization, you can craft each limb separately to mix and match a few things in case you’re unsure of exactly what you want.

Want some metal on your left leg but cloth on your right? Go ahead. Everything was designed to make sure that you, the player, could deck out your wastelander however you wanted.

Talking Angles

Real people don’t normally get creepily zoomed in on as a conversation is happening. Bethesda may have missed the mark on this in past Fallout games, but it’s not a mistake they are looking to repeat in Fallout 4.

Fallout 4’s conversations play out like they should – just two individuals having a conversation with the camera at an appropriate distance, as their mouths move like mouths tend to. The camera will even switch between the player and the NPC, just to let you know that Fallout 4 both remembers and loves you.

Yay for non-voyeuristic cameras during video game dialogue.

Faction Abilities

Factions are like small families you can join because Vault-Tec already stole everything you hold near and dear to your heart. These are organizations that you can join in order to help them achieve their goals. In exchange, you usually get some sweet gear and a place to rest your head. Just like with family! However, Fallout 4 contains an extra bonus to those who stick along for the long haul.

Each faction will grant an ability to players after the completion of a few tasks. Things like artillery and Vertibird support are available, and they can really turn the tide for a player in need of some assistance.

Romance

Last, but most certainly not least, is a little thing called love. Who says a Lone Wanderer has to be alone forever? Well, the title maybe, but rules are meant to be broken. You’ve survived a nuclear war and have managed to escape a vault (not too many individuals can boast the same feat). Some love wouldn’t hurt at this point.

Fallout 4 has over 10 different companions to choose from, and all of the human ones can be romanced, regardless of gender. It turns out that you really can find love in a hopeless place.
