Examining the Machine Carcass in Horizon Forbidden West

At the start of Horizon Forbidden West, during the Reach for the Stars quest, you’ll come across a machine carcass riddled with arrows. You need to examine the carcass to begin the tutorial for making arrows. There has been some confusion around this and some reports of bugs blocking player progression.

With two tests, it doesn’t seem that this is an actual bug. The interact prompt might be a little wonky, but there doesn’t seem to be an issue with it showing up for players. Here is where we were at when the option for examining the machine corpse popped up:

One other possible explanation is that players are rushing to the destination ahead of Varl. Without Varl and standing in almost this exact same spot, the interact Examine Machine Carcass would flicker and not actually register triangle being pressed.

That being said, players shouldn’t really be encountering an actual bug, just a little bit of an oddly behaving interact prompt. However, seeing as this is the very beginning of the game, there is the easy option of restarting from a new file. The game also goes a little wild on autosaves, so you could easily reload from a little before this to retry if there is an actual issue.

There you have it, all you need to know for examining the machine carcass in Horizon Forbidden West.
