With the release of Minecraft 1.17 Caves and Cliffs part 1, some players may be wondering how to get moss blocks. In this guide, we’ll explain every way to get Minecraft Moss blocks, what they’re used for, and how to pick them up once you’ve found them.
How to Get Moss Blocks in Minecraft
Moss Blocks can currently only be found in lush caves, which are coming in the second part of the Caves and Cliffs Minecraft 1.17 update due later this year.
In the meantime, Minecraft moss blocks can be obtained by trading with Wandering Traders. You’ll need to trade 2 Emeralds for 1 Moss Block, but only buy one, as there’s an easy way to create more moss once you’ve got one block of it.
To do this, make sure you’ve got some bone meal available to you. This is crafted from either a single Bone to get 3 Bone Meal, or a Bone block to get 9 Bone Meal.
You now need to place the Moss block next to Gravel, Dirt, Stone, Deepslate, Tuff, Granite, Andesite or Podzol blocks, and then use the Bone Meal on the Moss block. This will then cause the Minecraft Moss block to grow and spread to the surrounding blocks, allowing you to then break them and create even more by repeating the method. Here’s a full list of blocks affected:
- Andesite
- Deepslate
- Diorite
- Dirt
- Granite
- Grass
- Mycelium
- Podzol
- Polished Andesite
- Polished Diorite
- Polished Granite
- Rooted Dirt
- Stone
Minecraft Moss Blocks can also be obtained by looting them from a shipwreck. You have a 42.1% chance of getting between 1-4 Moss Blocks from a Shipwreck Supply chest, so these are well worth checking.
How to Pick Up Moss Blocks
Moss blocks can be picked up by simply breaking them with any tool or their bare hands. Once the block is broken, it can be picked up as you would any other.
What Moss Is Used for in Minecraft
Moss is primarily a cosmetic block that you can use to give your buildings and other creations a weathered feel by combining them with cobblestone blocks. These mossy cobblestone blocks were previously only found in structures procedurally-generated when creating a new world
Minecraft Moss blocks can also be used to create a carpet, if you’re looking to go au natural.
