Nier Replicant is very much a traditional RPG in every sense of the word: you’ll have side quests to do, a main quest to follow, as well as weapons to collect and enemies to slay so you can level up and become stronger. There are also a few side activities to get into, such as farming, which can be crucial in your playthrough, even if it’s not mandatory. Farming in Nier Replicant
As mentioned above, farming is completely optional and not at all mandatory for you to beat the game and see every ending. That being said, if you do decide to invest in the farming mini-game, you can make a lot of money early on in the game. Money doesn’t come by easily in Nier Replicant, and considering how important it is for purchasing items and upgrading weapons, you’ll need a lot of it.
Farming requires you to complete a couple of side quests, buy seeds, fertilizers, then get to watering.
Unlocking Farming
First things first, there are three small plots of cultivated land right outside the protagonist’s house, but you won’t be able to use them until you complete a side quest called Shopping List. Thankfully, this is one of the very first side quests you’ll unlock in the game.
Head over to the shops in the village and talk to the woman sitting on the bench. She’s the florist and will ask you to bring her three Tulip Bulbs. These can be bought from the florist in Seafront, which you can get to via the Southern Plains. Once you get those, deliver them to her to complete the quest, and one plot of land will become available for farming.
Take on her next side quest, which requires you to bring her three Bounty Fertilizers, which can also be bought at Seafront. Deliver those, and all plots of land will become available to you.
Planting Seeds
Next, you’ll need to get some seeds. They can be found while exploring the open-world, but your best bet is to just buy them from florists you encounter in the major settlements. Seeds sell for pretty cheap, and fertilizers are a little more expensive.
Speed Fertilizers will speed up the growth of a crop, while Bounty Fertilizers will increase the amount you can harvest. Crops take longer to grow than flowers, so it might be wise to use the Speed Fertilizers on those, while saving the Bounty ones for flowers. Crops like pumpkins, melons, wheat, and bell peppers also sell for more money in general.
While on the plot of land, press the circle button to interact with it, then choose a fertilizer type. Next, interact with it again, then choose a seed you want to plant. Finally, interact with it one last time, then choose the option to water the crop.
It’s recommended to come check back on your crops whenever you’re passing through the village to see if they need more watering. Crops can still grow without fertilizers, but make sure to water them to keep them healthy.
Harvesting and Selling
Once your crops are fully grown, you can interact with them and choose the Harvest option, and all your crops and flowers will get added to your inventory. Thankfully, you don’t need farming items for anything important like weapon upgrades, but do try to keep a few of each on you for side quests.
Aside from that, your crops can be sold at stores for quite a bit of money, which will prove to be very useful over the course of your journey.
