Nickelodeon has revealed the launch of Avatar Studios, a new division helmed by the series’ co-creators and dedicated to the expansion of the show’s universe.
During ViacomCBS’ investor day presentation held on Feb. 24, it was revealed that Avatar: The Last Airbender’s co-creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko would head a new division within Nickelodeon dedicated to creating new media tied to the Avatar franchise. This includes new animated series and films tied to the property, and an animated film is currently slated as the division’s first major project.
No specifics were given as to what the film would be about, though it was confirmed that production on the project is slated to start this year.
“It’s hard to believe it’s been 19 years since we created Avatar: The Last Airbender,” DiMartino and Konietzko said in an exclusive joint statement to Entertainment Weekly following the reveal. “But even after all that time, there are still many stories and time periods in Aang’s world that we are eager to bring to life. We are fortunate to have an ever-growing community of passionate fans that enjoys exploring the Avatarverse as much as we do.”

First aired on Nickelodeon between 2005 and 2008, Avatar: The Last Airbender was highly acclaimed by both critics and fans for its characters, world building and animation. The series saw an animated follow-up in the form of The Legend of Korra, which aired between 2012 and 2014 and received a generally positive reception.
The series is also set to receive a live-action adaptation which will air exclusively on Netflix, though fans have been skeptical of the project after the series’ creators left the project entirely back in August of 2020.
