Developer InnerSloth’s Among Us has enjoyed a remarkable surge in player numbers this summer. The whimsical party game, which sees players divided into imposters or crew members attempting to sabotage or save a spaceship, has emerged from a relatively unknown property to one that now enjoys regular concurrent numbers of well over 250,000.
In fact, last weekend saw its all-time peak hit a whopping 306,128 according to Steam Charts. That’s nearly double the numbers of Mediatonic’s Fall Guys, the battle royale party game sensation that has been grabbing headlines in recent weeks.
As noted by data analysis site Githyp, Among Us’ success can be attributed to its low barrier to entry, costing just $4.99 on Steam and is free-to-play on mobile devices. Cross-platform play has allowed users across all devices to enjoy the eight-person multiplayer experience, which seems to have provided the perfect tonic for COVID-19 lockdown isolation.
Further, a combination of its design and accessibility makes it very streamer-friendly, with some of Twitch’s biggest personalities teaming up in collaborative streams that have kept the game among the most-viewed on the platform. Among Us’ peak 443,000 Twitch views exceeds big-name AAA titles like Destiny 2 and GTAV.
