In past Animal Crossing games, specifically New Leaf, you were able to go to a special island to dive into the water to collect items. And, in New Horizons, the dive feature has returned, even though it wasn’t available at launch.
As for how to swim, head on over to Nook’s Cranny and buy the wetsuit for 3,000 bells. Once you have it, you’ll be able to swim around in the waters around the islands.
You can also cross rivers by using a vaulting pole that can be crafted and you can walk along the shoreline to pick up seashells and other items, but you can’t actually jump into the water and splash about until you have the wetsuit.
Nintendo is known to add new content to existing games in the form of DLC or free updates, and this is one of those cases. Nintendo added the ability to swim in the water later down the line. So you no longer have to deal with staying inland while doing those menial chores we love doing so much.
