Call of Duty’s latest iteration, Modern Warfare, brings back single player to the series. However, multiplayer is still a significant part of the experience. While many people will have played a Call of Duty multiplayer before, here are some multiplayer tips and tricks for anyone who is jumping into the series for the first time with Modern Warfare.
Most of these tips and tricks will be focused on honing your mindset for going into multiplayer matches, rather than specific instances to look out for, as that’ll help you get to grips with how the game plays and give you a good starting place.
Settle on Weapon Loadouts That Work For You
Modern Warfare Multiplayer Tips & Tricks
Just as you do in every Call of Duty game, you unlock the ability to create a class at level 4. You’ll get a vague idea of what’s available to you from the preset loadouts, but it’s important to experiment with the variety of weapons and gear as soon as you’re able to.
You’ll want to do this because you’ll do well if you become comfortable with one or two particular loadouts. Learning the recoil level of a particular assault rifle and getting an idea of what perks work with your playstyle will help you in the action.
Taking out enemies will become second nature, so that you’re no wasting time or ammo, and you’ll learn when is best to use your gear. Switching between things too much early on will see you struggle to get into the flow of Modern Warfare’s multiplayer.
Slow It Down
Modern Warfare Multiplayer Tips & Tricks
With you do longer having the super human double jumps of Black Ops or the jetpacks of Advanced Warfare, Modern Warfare follows the cliched Call of Duty idea of ‘boots on the ground’ pretty literally.
That has an impact on the speed of the game. The multiplayer in this year’s game feels slower and more tactical – at least as far as it can do in a Call of Duty game.
So that you’re not caught off guard all the time, slow it down. Don’t sprint everywhere. Especially when going around corners, keep focused and be ready to react to whatever could be there to surprise you.
Give the Other Modes a Try If You’re Struggling
Modern Warfare Multiplayer Tips & Tricks
If you’re really struggling with the intensity of the online modes and getting frustrated by your performances in matches, it might be worth trying out Modern Warfare’s other two modes.
Spec Ops can still be a bit overwhelming, and it still requires playing with other people, but the campaign is the perfect place to get to grips with the gameplay and learn which weapons you like the feel of.
You don’t have to play it for long if you don’t want to, but it’s good to get a feel for how Modern Warfare plays and it helps you get your eye in with the general mechanics. On top of that, the campaign is tells a great story.
Pay Attention to Teammates & Objectives
Modern Warfare Multiplayer Tips & Tricks
Just because Call of Duty doesn’t have the large open maps of Battlefield, nor a history of being objective focused, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t play that way.
Organising tactics with teammates if you have the means, especially in modes like Cyber Attack and Search & Destroy, can be the difference between winning and losing.
Also, playing the objective in modes like Domination will help you too. Playing with capturing flags as your focus can cause the opposing team to panic, giving you more of a chance to pick them off.
Running around on your own, concerned more about your kill/death ratio, will only have the opposite effect. Working together will have a positive for your team and your own stats.
Prepare For Different Modes & Maps
Modern Warfare Multiplayer Tips & Tricks
If you’re jumping into Modern Warfare’s Quick Play in multiplayer, you’ll likely be playing through a rotation of modes, including Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Cyber Attack.
All of the modes require different tactics, so think about what you need to do before they start. Also, it wouldn’t harm you to maybe have a custom loadout set for the modes that are particularly different. Maybe one with a silencer for Search & Destroy, or one with extra grenades for Domination.
Then, you also play matches at nighttime or on larger maps as part of the Quick Play rotation. Matches in the dark require you to move more slowly and use the darkness to your advantage, while larger maps open up the possibility of using scoped weapons.
Just don’t rush into every mode and every map in the same way. Consider how you might need to change your approach and you might find yourself doing better.
