Somewhat surprisingly and out of the blue, Capcom announced yesterday that they’d be unveiling a brand new game called Project Resistance at Tokyo Game Show.
It’s also most definitely going to be a new Resident Evil game. Y’know, because the letters RE have been highlighted. The series has been enjoying quite a bit of momentum lately, so let’s take a guess as to what this new game could be.
It’s Probably Outbreak
Here’s the thing: Project Resistance is probably going to be an online multiplayer spin-off game for the series, and Wesker knows we’ve had enough of those in the past.
Normally, this would be bad news for the series, considering Capcom’s recent track record with online multiplayer games. In fact, the less said about Umbrella Corps and Operation Raccoon City, the better.
However, as we mentioned previously, the series has been on such a roll, that it would be nothing short of jarring if Capcom decided to push out a game similar to Umbrella Corps and ORC yet again. Especially since the reception to those games has been so poor.
With that in mind, we’re fairly optimistic that Project Resistance is going to be some sort of revival of Resident Evil Outbreak.
The Outbreak games were some of the most unique and beloved games in the series, allowing players to create their own scenarios, choose their own characters, and work together to progress through the various levels.
Resident Evil 8
Considering that the Resident Evil 2 remake just released earlier this year, and the fact that Project Resistance is going to be playable at TGS 2019, it’s highly unlikely that this is a brand new mainline entry in the series.
However, it has been a couple years since the release of Resident Evil 7, which released to widespread critical acclaim. It’s about time we got a bit of new info about what’s next for the Resident Evil series, and how Capcom’s going to tackle the new Blue Umbrella arc of the story.
We’re not holding our breath for RE8 news, but that would be pretty sweet.
Resident Evil 3 Remake
This seems to be the one thing everyone wants, now that Resident Evil 2’s remake has proven to be such a massive success.
However, just like RE8, it’s just way too soon for an RE3 remake announcement. But it’s the title, Project Resistance, that gives us just a tiny bit of hope for an RE3 remake.
Resistance could very well be an allusion to Carlos’ identity as a mercenary/guerilla soldier in Resident Evil 3, or just the general fight against the zombie outbreak in Raccoon City.
Again, we’re not holding our breath for a Resident Evil 3 remake, and from the few leaked images that have surfaced, this totally isn’t happening in September.
A Standalone Raid/Mercenaries Mode
This could actually be plausible. Raid and Mercenaries have been absent from the Resident Evil series for a while now, despite how well-received they’ve been in the past.
Maybe including these modes in the recent games wouldn’t have been thematically consistent with the game itself, so it’s possible that Capcom’s looking to release a standalone game that focuses on the core elements of Raid or Mercenaries mode.
A Mercenaries game would be highly cooperative, with players working together to fend off waves and waves of zombies while trying to extend their time and increasing their scores before extraction.
A Raid mode game would be pretty nice as well, featuring characters from all over the series, and an emphasis on the RPG-like elements of leveling up separate characters and collecting new cosmetics and weapons.
Who are we kidding, though? It’s probably gonna be a new Outbreak. And as long as it isn’t yet another awful Umbrella Corps or Operation Raccoon City, count us in.
